I'm really somewhat of a noob as far as camcorders go but I'm looking for an HD camcorder around $1000 to film an independent documentary (as a student) over the next 5 or so years. I need something that will work in most light conditions as well as having good image stabilization and autofocus. I've been looking at the Canon HV-10 and Sony's HDR-HC1 and HDC-HC3 but I figured I'd ask some guys who know a little more about this than I do so..... Any suggestions?

All the models you've mentioned have been discontinued in the US. You might look at the HV20 and the HC7.

I know but I hear that the HC1 are better than any of the newer models. And I don't think the Canon has been discontinued. Also the HC7 is out of my price range

The HC1 was much loved and much mourned when it went away. There may be a few used ones kicking around, and there are still some in other countries.

There may also be a few HV10s left in stores, but it's not being made. It has an upright form which some people love and others find very off-putting.

The HV20 has been getting glowing reviews. Both the HV20 and the HC7 have a few more manual controls than their predecessors.

has lots of reviews and comparison charts you might want to look at. And all the sites have -- ahem, vocal -- debates about what the best entry level HDV camera is.

So, if I could choose. HV20, HC7, or HC1
