What is HD?

By reading a review of the upcoming Sony HDR-UX1, which is based on the AVCHD format (not HDV), I asked the question about what software is able to edit this format ?
It seems that Canopus Edius or Premiere Pro are not able to deal with this format, and it seems difficult to know when this is going to appear... Any news ? Thanks |

I have read that one would convert the raw unedited files to say H.264 with say Quicktime Pro, or to a WMF and Then do the editing

Originally, QTpro was supposed to do all that, but the new one doesn't work that easy. The conversion process is more compicated. Kinda sucks...is possible though. It will be dealt with shortly ... hopefully in about 2-3 Months. TMPGEnc ![]() Last edited by Kuemmet; 12-10-2006 at 11:53 PM. |

There really isn't anything out there right now to properly edit AVCHD, but Canopus did make an announcement the other day that beginning December 22, 2006 they will offer as a free download a program called Canopus AVCHD converter that will transcode AVCHD footage to the Canopus HQ Codec for subsequent editing with the Canopus Edius 3 for HDV and Canopus Edius Pro 4 NLE software packages.
You can find their Japanese language press release about this at the following URL. http://www.canopus.co.jp/press/2006/avchd.htm At least Canopus users will have something to work with. I would expect that other NLE makers will eventually offer updates to support AVCHD as well. Frank. |

Here's the link to download the converter directly.
This external program converts the .m2ts files to the Canopus HQ Codec (.avi). You can select 2ch (stereo) or 6ch (5.1) Audio. The generated avi file increases by the factor 7, but can be imported and easily edited with Edius in full quality (on HI-end PCs). |

You should take the following steps:
1.) start the AvcHD2HQW Program (should be installed in your canopus-folder) 2.) select your Soundsettings in the Dialogbox 3.) in the following window, choose the folder in which your m2ts files are located. Program is terminating after this step. 4.) open your filemanager and go to your m2ts-files. You will see that the files are associated with the converter now. Just doubleclick the file, and the conversion starts.... 5.) after the conversion has finshed, you got a new .avi which is your Canopus HQ coded file that can be imported and edited with your Edius NLE. Hope this helps, Good Luck. |

Yep, followed those steps, but I get an immediate "conversion has failed" when the converter starts up (looks like it's during the "under perpetration" step.
Anyways, I have the TMPGEnc/PowerDVD process working, but this seemed like a much better solution short-term. I'll debug this more later and see if I can't get it working. Thanks for the posting and help servicedessert Dan |

...on a side note, if I run the "HQ Codec Setup" I get "The HQ Codec cannot be used" error.
Interesting... |

About the conversion avchd2hq through the canopus utility, you guys need the codec installed, I'm downloading Canopus Edius Pro 4 to try it but logically that is the solution.

The latest version of ULead DVD Movie Factory can import data from the Sony HDR-SR1 and allow you to edit, filter, add music & titles and output to Blu-Ray or regular DVD. This is the first budget based code that allows you to get a decent final product all in one step, from import to final version, without having to monkey around with codecs, intermediated transcoding efforts, etc. andt it is simple to use.
However the only HD output output will be HD-mpeg , or Windows Media 1080 based format, not AVCHD. |
