I actually bought Corel Movie Studio Pro x2 today from Amazon. When I start using it mid to late next week, I'll make sure and give a full report. I will say that the Pixela software that came with my Canon HF100 does serve some very basic purposes. I was able to send the video straight from my camera (hooked up via USB) to the program and burn a DVD-R in AVCHD format to play in my PS3. The video on the disc looked great without any degradation. Also the program gives you the option of burning the disc in AVCHD hi def or to traditional DVD resolution. We made a normal DVD and it looked quite good. We then tried to use the options on the Pixela program to edit AVCHD. It was a bit frustrating and cumbersome, the transitions were not just click and drag. We ended up just realizing what everybody else said....................just to buy an editing program. But I will keep the Pixela software on my PC as it is pretty easy to burn a DVD when in a hurry.

It also has a option called Movie tracker. This allows you to process your video into a single image file. So if you do a pan across something, it will process the pan into a panoramic still image of the entire video. It's very cool.

Well after a week of use I have a few impressions. First, when using it for editing, you need to enable to Smart Proxy feature. It makes the editing much quicker and manageable. It creates temp lower res files for editing which makes your computer faster and more responsive when reviewing. Yet when burning the entire project onto a disc or sharing it, it uses the original hi res files. Also, I like the ability the software has to convert AVCHD files to Mpeg2, Mpeg4, AVI, Mov, mpg or several other formats for sharing on Youtube, Vimeo or for watching on PC.

For anyone looking for a great package for editing and authoring, I'd highly recommend Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/
It comes with Adobe Encore CS4 which is for authoring DVD's and Blu-ray. Having been using Premiere for the last 10 years or so and having been using CS4 with AVCHD for a few weeks, I can say it works very well. I've had a few issues with the program crashing on me, but my system needs to some cleanup, so I've written the crashes off as my system being an issue. Premiere is excellent for editing and has a ton of features. I probably don't even make use of half of them. Encore is the same way. Just last night I put together my first blu-ray disc. I even added multiple audio tracks and a pop-up menu. Its very cool! The only downside to it is that its an expensive program. If you are in school or a teacher, then take advantage of being able to buy an academic version. I did 10 years ago and have been upgrading ever since, skipping a version here or there. It works great with the AVCHD files I've used so far. Playback is smooth and clean. Any questions, post em.

Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate works great, once you know the secret!
I have been complaining about Pinnacle's software and AVCHD since I first bought my HF100 about 14 months ago. Now I have found the secret to editing painlessly with Studio 12. You need to convert to a high bitrate (to preserve video quality) MPEG first. Once your video has been converted to MPEG, 25 Mb. You drop the converted clips into Pinnacle Studio 12, and it works like it is SD video you are editing. For example. About 6 months ago, I was trying to edit an HD project and it was crashing, taking DAYS to render, etc. A month or so ago, I found a tip in Pinnacle's forums about converting the video first. I tried it, using Nero Vision to convert to high bitrate video MPEG files and it works. ![]() Now instead of wasting a week or more on a video using AVCHD, I let the computer take 2 or 3 hours to convert a couple hours of AVCHD to MPEG file. Then I use the MPEG files to make my video project. I can add fades, wipes, special motion menus, and it doesn't crash. Rendering has been cut down from days, to just 2 or 3 hours for a 40 minute HD video! Amazing difference! ![]() Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate acts like a completely different, stable, easy to use product using this process. Now I can have fun shooting, then doing my post production! I used to get so frustrated that the pets would run and hide! ![]() -Tom Now with a new Canon HF S100 Video Cam, and loving it!

Having to convert before being able to work with it sounds like a pain. You'd think they'd fix that.

![]() I have been using Pinnacle Studio for about 9 or 10 years and I really like the interface. Since Avid bought the company, the product has gotten much more stable. I also have Sony Vegas running on the same machine, and it doesn't have the problem Studio has. But the interface, features, and ease of use (otherwise!) make the product a lot of fun to do post production. Besides, Nero Vision can batch convert my MTS files. I just start it and forget it for a few hours, then start my project at my convenience. I am tempted to try your Adobe solution. It is just kind of expensive.

Has anyone tried Adobe CS4 with AVCHD? And how would this work on a Intel dual core with 3 gigs ram?

The following video-editing software features support for the AVCHD format:
* Adobe Premiere Pro (from version CS4 onward; support not included in the trial version - activation must occur to gain AVCHD support) * Adobe Premiere Elements (from version 7 onward) * Apple's Final Cut Express 4, Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, and iMovie '08-'09 (iMovie is bundled with all new Apple computers; Final Cut Express and Pro are sold separately) do not support editing of AVCHD clips directly. Imported AVCHD clips are automatically converted into the Apple Intermediate Codec format, which requires more hard disk space (40GB per hour as opposed to 13.5GB per hour for Standard Definition DV), a more powerful machine (an Intel-based Mac), and a more recent OS (Mac OS X 10.5). Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 "logs and transfers" the footage from AVCHD to AppleProRes by default and also gives the option of converting to the Apple Intermediate Codec. It does not allow native transferring of the *.m2ts clips nor directly editing them. The latest release of Apple's iLife suite (specifically, iMovie) has added support for AVCHD Lite cameras and camcorders.[41][42] * Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 is capable of editing AVCHD natively, without transcoding, intermediate codecs or proxy files. Using a patented technique (SVRT), AVCHD clips can be edited and output losslessly to AVCHD or Blu-ray disc. PowerDirector also supports GPU encoding acceleration on both ATI and NVidia graphics platforms. PowerDirector can output the finished movie to a variety of video formats, DVD, AVCHD on DVD, or Blu-ray disc. * Grass Valley's Edius 5.0 * MacroSystem's Casablanca S-series editors (using Bogart 2.3 onward) AVCHD on DVD or Blu-ray disc * Dayang's Montage Extreme [ME] 1.2 * Nero Ultra Edition Enhanced (from version 7 onward) includes the Nero Vision editor and the Nero Showtime player, which both support AVCHD files. NeroVision can author DVDs in the AVCHD format. * Pinnacle Studio Plus (from version 11 onward) * Sony Vegas 7.0e * Vegas Pro (from version 8 onward) * Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (from version 8 onward) * Kdenlive for Linux and BSD platforms For Converting: My-Video-Converter Video Converter for Mac can convert MTS/M2TS files from some AVCHD camcorders (such as Sony HDR-SR (xx) series) and Blu-ray DVDs. It helps compress and convert MTS/M2TS to MP4, 3GP, AVI, MOV, MKV, FLV, VOB, SWF, MP3, FLAC, OGG, WAV, M4A, MP3, WAV, etc.
