What would you guys use for Apple Leopard? I have a Canon HG20 and need to be able to copy and paste the video over to my Macbook quickly as a .mts file and later import into iMovie, but it doesn't recognize the format so I need something to convert it first. I can go straight from camera to iMovie but it's a 1:1 transfer rate (converting on the fly) and it takes way too long.

have you tried transferring the entire directory structure over to the hdd, instead of copying just the mts file? i think that is required on a mac, pc's will take just the mts file.

I believe I have...I copied over the folder containing the .mts files and it didn't work. I'll try to back out to a high directory and try again. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to use a 3rd party software to convert before I import into iMovie; just don't know the best one to use that won't compress the quality.

yes, it has to be the highest directory, with all of the associated files, not just the directory with the .mts files.

apple does not yet support native .mts editing, but my understanding of imovie was that you should be able to import video directly off of the camcorder, and imovie will convert it to a compatible format... ideally, you'd want to use prores, not the aic format, but that takes up a lot of disk space.

for converters, you could take a look at mpegstreamclip(?), it's free.

Default New year, same questions :-)

Hi all - a year ago when i got my Panasonic HDC SD1 AVCHD camera I ended up using Ulead VideoStudio 11 which was fine for making a DVD (but really slow and painful to use).

It's been a year since I bothered doing any editing and therefore before i spend many weekends catching up on the piles of files i need to chop up, I wondered if the world had changed much and there was a now market leading package that everyone agrees is the best for AVCHD?

I specifically wish to move on from DVD and indeed discs. Discs are too scratchable and breakable in a family situation, and HD disc burning seems a pain. I'd rather stream a HDef quality file off my PC to the Xbox 360 under the tv.

So:

1. Whats the market leading AVCHD package of choice?

2. Can it export HDef files that will play on the Xbox 360? I can not seem to figure this out using Ulead VideoStudio ....

Check this out...I was reading the specs for Final Cut Pro on the Apple Website and it says that AVCHD is supported. I decided to call Apple direct to verify. I just got off the phone with Apple Customer Service/Tech Support. According to them, Final Cut Pro 6 supports AVCHD and Final Cut Express 4 supports AVCHD as well. The only catch is your Mac computer must be an Intel version.

you have now cross-posted this misinformation to three threads, and it is not correct... apple currently does NOT support *native* avchd editing, and it does NOT support avchd smart-rendering.

apple re-encodes all avchd video files to another format before they are edited.

I apologize for posting "incorrect information", especially on 3 different threads. It just so happens that I was reviewing the first two before I decided to start one from scratch. I am not trying to show my genius, I am simply sharing information that I get as others do. Some right some wrong. The corrections get made as people chime in. What I stated was what they gave me when I called Apple. I never said Native AVCHD, I just said AVCHD. But now I know that we are speaking in specifics. Anyway, I just want anyone interested in this subject to know that a new thread was started just about this so we could talk about it, and not take up more space here where others may want to talk about other Software and Equipment. I just happen to be interested in Macs, Final Cut Pro, and AVCHD.

This is as confusing as ever. I have been doing research on which software program to buy. No matter which one I look into they all seem to get bad reviews on amazon. Pinnacle studio plus, Nero 9, Adobe premier pro, Ulead, Vegas.................I'm more confused than ever now.

There are fans and detractors for every package. Most of those who have problems got the wrong package for what they want to do, ignored the required specs for their computer, haven't read the instructions, or all of the above.

+1000!!!!

I can speak to the buy before reading part. I bought Pinnacle Studio. Now that I've used it for 6 months, I love it. But it was some serious labor pains to get there.
