Default More AVCHD editing software

I am currently evaluating Nero 7 ultra edition. It can import AVCHD, edit, and export to AVI, DVD, Blu-Ray and HD 1080i mpeg format, but no AVCHD output.
So far I have had no major problems with any of the onboard edititing capabilities, although they are more basic than other NLE's, but it is another competititively priced simple to use one-step NLE solution. The 1080i output is very good, with no apparent loss of quality from AVCHD, however the comparable mpeg files are larger than the original H.264 files from the SR-1.

There is a 15 day trial download from www.nero.com.

It is good to see at least a variety of editors now capable of handling AVCHD , a great format, that Sony itself has endorsed, yet has neglected to provide a video editing solution for thus far, putting them at risk of running their own fine AVCHD camcorders into the ground...

I'd love to be able to edit AVCHD right off the camera on my Toaster. Right now what I do is using Sony's utility that came with the camera, and export the HD file as a series of pictures, and recompile that image sequence as an uncompressed AVI. Maybe that process takes the same time as it would to convert an AVCHD file into any other editable format...?

Default Pinnacle Studio Plus 11

[quote=nounours18200;160990]By reading a review of the upcoming Sony HDR-UX1, which is based on the AVCHD format (not HDV), I asked the question about what software is able to edit this format ?

It seems that Canopus Edius or Premiere Pro are not able to deal with this format, and it seems difficult to know when this is going to appear...

Any news ?

I recently purchased Pinnacle Studio Plus to use with my Sony HDR-UX1 and find it is very easy to use and supports the AVCHD format. The only drawback is the time it takes to write to a dvd after you're done editing. It can convert formats, capture screenshots, burn all types of dvd's and add great special effects. I have been satisfied with its capabilities. One other drawback is the constant entering of activations keys. You would think for 100 bucks you wouldn't have to purchase extras like 5.1 surround capability. The activation keys are as long as the ones microsoft makes you enter.

Thanks

Hi Folks, I'm a complete beginner and am awaiting delivery of an HDR SR7. I have Muvee Autoproducer 6 (for Dummies ;-)) and am wondering what I can do to make AVCHD output editable in that? Can I convert it? Do I have to shoot low-def and wait? All thoughts welcome.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8, Corel’s Ulead Videostudio 11 Plus and Pinnacle Studio 11 Plus and Ultimate editions (according to posts elsewhere on the web) all provide AVCHD support. All are cheaper and do more than your app, which does not support AVCHD.

Default AVCHD editing

Hi, Thanks for that
I went to Amazon and checked out Vegas 8 Platinum Edition and 8 out of 8 user reviews say they are having little or no problem editing avchd material. Unless I'm missing something, this would suggest two simple things: 1. Sony are, as usual, trying to lock people in to their own range of synergetic products, and 2. If you don't mind that, you may have a pretty good solution here! Rob

As you have the Sony cam, I'd recommend VMSP8. If you had a non-Sony cam you'd need to use one of the other two.

But buy at NewEgg. It's cheaper than Amazon for stuff like this.

Default Panasonic avchd

Hello, I am a complete video novice.... I purchased the panasonic with AVCHD. Having read the previous postings sounds like pinacle studio 11 plus or corel's Ulead videostudio11 plus would work / be the best options for editing??? Anyone know??

Thanks,

Video Minion.

Hi all,

new to this forum, and it looks like I've been missing out on an awful lot. I'm pretty new to the whole HD world (although I have a Panny HD tv).

Anyway, Ive just got myself a nice new HD camcorder (Panny HDC SD5) and am quite pleased with it - not that I've actually done much yet.

I have a couple of questions on getting the best out of it - basically for self and family to watch footage of my 6 month old.

Anyway, I'll crack right on with the questions.

1. I'd like to get the best quality format for viewing recordings and was wondering whats the best. AVCHD seems to be good but I dont understand too much about saving it to media. If I got a blueray disc (and burner) could I (and what would I use to) burn it?

2. From what I understand its also possible to burn to normal DVD. I presume this would be only in SD? If so, I presume I would have a choice of formats to save to, that could be played in a "normal" DVD player that family would have.

3. If I got a Blueray DVD player (looking at a Panny one) Is it a case of just popping in the media and it would recognise it and play just like a normal DVD? Ideally, I,d like to be able just to slot in the SDHC card and have the footage run from there.

4. If I bought a Blueray DVD recorder, could I simply copy the media direct to disc?

5. At the moment I wouldnt really be editing anything other than putting the clips together with maybe a title between them. What would be the best software to start (learn) with? I will probably get a bit more adventurous late on, so it may be worth getting something that is pretty much "point and click" but has advanced features for later use.

Sorry for all the questions in a first post, but I'm really trying to get my head around this new format.

Cheers for any help.

Billy

Billy,
Congrats on the newborn.

My daughter is 16 months now, and I have filmed her from 11 months on with our Sony HDR-SR7... AVCHD format, and Love it.

Now, to answer a few questions.

1. I use my HDR-SR7 as both my recorder and Player... Here is how.

I export my media to my desktop via Sony included software which tracks all video in a calendar software package. I will give Sony credit on the included tool for tracking all media files... it’s VERY nice. However, the included editing software is not for me...

I use Pinnacle Ultimate 11.
pinnaclesys dot com PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Studio+Ultimate+11

To edit all clips and produce some GREAT 10 - 30 min clips. Well, I think they are great. LOL

When I burn them, I just tell the software to CREATE the AVCHD format but DO not burn it to disk. It creates the stream image file *.m2ts and I just copy the file into the directory the Sony calendar software uses to TRACK all video clips. The Sony software AUTOMATICALLY finds it and then I just tell the software to move the clip back to my HDR-SR7.

I connect the HDMI cable from my Onkyo Surround sound system into my HDR-sr7 and that’s it... I have full HD video on my 60" TV with no extra Blue-Ray player...

Why is this so nice? We still don't know if Blue-ray or HDV will win the race. Pinnacle ultimate will take AVCHD format and convert it to either format (Remember you can bet on 5 min of computer time for every 1 min of video) depending on how powerful your computer is.

With regards to down conversion, the software will let you do that as well.

Regards,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply.

pretty detailed stuff. At the moment I'm just connecting the camcorder directly to the TV via HDMI and playing it from there. Pretty simple stuff and really need to start editing it together.

On a plus note, I'm waiting for the arrival of my Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu Ray player which allows you to slot the SDHC card directly in and play it from there. This will be connected directly through my setup to allow easy playback, and will save the hassle of connecting/disconnecting the HDMI lead at the TV every time I need it.

I know it will be a bit more expensive, certainly in the short term, but I think I will end up storing most of my clips on the SDHC card. It just seems to be a lot less hassle than burning and storing on DVDs. Its probably not - and there's probably a lot of reasons why I should use DVD - but I seem to have this in my head as the way to go. For the moment at least. I'm getting a couple of 8M cards for Xmas hopefully.

I presume it would be easy enough to just drag the files to the SDCH card once theyve been edited, in the AVCHD format, providing I have the 32 bit reader. In fact from your post I could just drag it back to the card in the cam.

I'd like to be able to keep the original recordings and the edited ones too.

I've not had much time to look at any of the editing software yet as things are a bit hectic with Xmas coming up, but I'll try and get hold of the pinnacle stuff and have a bash with a trial version.

On an even brighter note, the recordings look very very good. In fact my girlfriend took great delight in showing it off to her mother, who has an SD cam and had been taking great delight in doing a lot of recording and making a big deal of it. Girlfriend took great delight being able to say "Have you seen how good this is compared to...." Women eh? I took a certain amount of glee too though.

Watching my son fall asleep in his high chair whilst being fed is a highlight so far.

Once again, ta for the reply.

Quick update...

For those running into issues with my previous posted thread with regards to exporting your AVCHD video back to your Sony Camcorder (in my case HDR-SR7) Please read on.

Problem:
ALL Sony HDD cameras currently have a 2GB File size issue.

Sony Motion Picture Browser will fail after HOURS of trying to export a video clip that is larger than 2GB with the following error message.

"An unknown error occurred." With an "ok" button...

More details:
Is the 2GB file limit due to the transport protocol, or the filesystem type I am not 100% sure, as I did not waste time to transfer a > 2GB file to the HDD on the camera as the Camera can not do anything with it...

Exact condition:
You cannot move a file from your computer to the camera using the "Sony Motion Picture Browser" when the File exceeds 2GB.

Work around:
Option A.
Keep your AVCHD clips to 15 min (Which I found keeps my size at 1.9 GB on AVG.

Besides, That’s about the length of time your family members can handle before running from the room. LOL

Option B.
Buy a Blue Ray "AVCHD" or HDV Burner and burn the video to BD or HDV Media... Ohh yea, you will need a Player. You’re looking at $900 for this option. Option A is at no extra cost. Current price at Fry’s for Blue Ray burners run $479, and media is about $18 each. Still high, so I will be using Option A for a little longer.

I have logged a call with Sony L2 and L3 support on ticket # E35971358 to request an enhancement to the software to either use larger than 2GB files or Auto split. (Unix split command would be nice here...)

I do not foresee any enhancement in the near future. If anyone finds a different work around than the two above let me know.

Regards,
Greg

Happy editing.

Give Amazon a shot at your BD writables (about $12 bucks) and have you tried Sony Vegas for your editing and burning software? They do have a trial package - Vegas Pro - which does burn BD's!!! Go Blu!!
