Record help from digital8 camcorder to pc

I have Sony DCR-TRV310 Camcorder and couple of Hi-8 Cassette.
I want to record my videos from these tapes to computer.
This camcorder has fireware connection and my laptop also has.
I have new cable and try to connect camcorder to the computer.
However, when I plug cable, nothing happens.
I try to use capture program but it says capture device is not connected.
There was DV Gate plus but it was working with windows xp.
Now I have windows 7 and looking for solution to record my hi-8 tapes to pc.
Can anybody help me best way to get same or best quality from camcorder tape to computer?
I see there are some cables online fireware (1394) to usb which I do not think I can get clear video with that.
Is there any other cable like a/v cables (yellow-red-white) cable to fireware?
Unfortunately my fireware connection from camcorder to laptop does not recognize this item.
I really want to know why. I have two different laptop with fireware connection but both does not recognize this camcorder.
Do I need to install special program before connection fireware cable from camcorder to laptop?
Please somebody help.Thanks

Look for an older Pinnacle (Dazzle) dongle. E-bay has tons of them. You will use the S vid or composite output on the camera and the USB input to your computer. Make sure that the Dazzle product you buy comes with the Pinnacle software for editing. Simple way to transfer and you should notice no degradation of quality since you are shooting in standard def to begin with.

One problem is that the 310 is Digital 8 and Hi8 is analog, and not all Dig8 cams recognize Hi8 or were backwards compatible. The 310 most likely does not. Anything below the 400 series didn't.

FW is by definition digital and Hi8 by definition isn't. You either need a Dig8 cam that can read analog or, better yet, just send the tapes out and have them transferred to DVD.

Did you in fact shoot these tapes with this cam?
