Camcorder or Camera

I have to make a decision and it as all so confusing:

Should I buy a HD Camera with Full 1080 HD, 16 x Optical Zoom like Canon powershot sx260 hs or should I go for a Camcorder like the Canon VIXIA HF20?

There is a huge price difference, I want to know if for everyday recording what do I need to buy. Most of my camera needs are met smart phones like IPhone? Have the new generation camera as good as the Camcorders?

Second question is what is the difference between a Canon VIXIA HF20 and HF300 or HF M500 or a Sony CX260

Honestly, I think the manufactures flood the market with a million models to confuse the customers. All I need is a device to record HD Video -- School performances or home videos.

I can't say how the camera would work for video but can tell you that the Sony 260 has worked great for recording concerts in bars with limited lighting. I use about 20x zoom and have had good results. The Sony goes for somewhere around $500; probably less than a camera.
