Default Sony HDR-DC3 Tape Lock Sensor Broken? Fix/defeat? (the tape is locked check the tab

All of a sudden my Sony HDR-DC3 camcorder says "the tape is locked -check the tab" when trying to record. The record tab is definitely slid to the "rec position" and NOT the "save position." I've tried:

1) different tapes
2) power-cycling
3) pressing reset button

Does anyone know how this "lock sensor" works? I'd like to try to "defeat" the sensor. It's interesting that as soon the tape compartment closes--that is, collapses horizontally BEFORE sinking down into the camera, it's already incorrectly sensed the tab.

Get a can of compressed air and blow the carriage out,,pay particular attention to the lock tab. If that don't help,,,give ya $50 bucks for it.
