Default burn AVCHD (.mt2s) files onto regular DVD

I have a Canon Vixia HG20 high def camcorder. I've been recording video clips in the HD mode and want to convert it to regular DVD format and burn onto regular DVD so that my family/friends who don't have blu-ray or HD can view the clips. I tried using one commercially available software but it didn't work well with the variable rate clips. Does anyone know of a solution how to get the .mt2s files with variable bit rate onto a regular DVD disc?? I'm open to both free or purchase-required software, as long as it solves my problem.

Sorry if this has already been discussed. Newbie here.

First it might help to know which program you used so we know not to recommend it right back to you.

Second, PC or MAC?

Third, are you looking to edit any of the files, or burn straight clip for clip like a VCR tape?

1. I don't want to give the software program a bad rep, so I'll just say that it has the letter 'X' in it, and "DVD", and a word similar to "transform" (not in that order). I hear it's actually supposed to be a decent program, but maybe just not with what I'm trying to do.

2. I'm using a PC with XP.

3. No editing at the moment, although maybe in the future. Just getting started here, so gotta get the basics down before noodling around with the extras.
