Default Canon HF S100 - number of .mts files created

I'm looking to purchase a Canon HF S100 camcorder. I'll be shooting a lot of sporting events where I'll be pausing and resuming recording a LOT. Can someone tell me if a new .mts file is created each time? (i would end up with 200+ files every game)

The short answer is yes.

Any comments on whether having many small videos is more/less difficult to deal with for 1)playback and 2)burning a DVD-Video? Any detail information or application recommendations would be helpful.

More clips are better for editing, as you can simply delete the ones you don't want. It would be really tiring to have to scroll through one really long clip and then mark all the in and out points of the shots you want.

Once you have a finished project, it makes no difference in terms of burning to DVD.

The only issue is that Premiere slows down when dealing with a lot of assets, most noticeably in loading. But other editors may not have this issue, and you don't say which you plan to use.

Remember, there's only two or three interesting minutes in every game, so you'll be doing a lot of editing.

Thanks very much for the information. Still researching editors. Guess I'm looking at Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, may look at Pinnacle Studio. Any recommendations?

Requirements are to output mpeg-2 for DVD-Video image and WMV (full game film with very little or no editing). Will also perform some editing to make highlight tapes (marking in/out points within a few plays).

Also, you wouldn't happen to know where I could find some raw 5Mbps and 7Mbps footage to test with (LP and SP on the Canon)? I've spent a lot of time looking but cannot find any samples.

Of the 3 editing programs you are looking at, Pinnacle will be the one with the lowest learning curve. Vegas and Premiere offer more editing and effects options but for your use, me thinks that Pinnacle 12 or 14 will work just fine. Keep in mind when working with these heavy files, it puts a huge tax on your processor. If you plan on doing a lot of editing, rendering and burning, me highly suggest getting a quad core processor, go 64 bit, and load it up with ram.
