Welcome. I would highly recommend buying a DVD, Blueray or HDDVD calibration disk from DVE. It's very simple to use and your new TV will be calibrated to your own specifications and based on where you view your TV.

Yeah, I know what you mean...it took me awhile to get comfortable figuring out the DVE, but the great thing was is that I could start all over by hitting the back to default settings. It took me a couple of tries and my Sony and Samsung have never looked better than they do now. Take your time, it's worth it.

DVE requires the use of "chapters" and "titles". These are listed in the nomenclature that comes with the disk. Once you have learned how to "navigate" with your DVD players remote, you will find it pretty easy to get around in the program.

For best user results, set the display up in the environment (lights on/off, drapes open/closed etc.) and then set up the black and white levels first. (brightness = Black level, picture = White level). Just getting these as close to perfect as you can will really help! Sony's v5100 series has full controls in user iirc, but setting it to movie/cinema and the warm 2 color temp will get you very near to d65 when you are watching a film on the BR.

The V series btw, is a great bang for the buck in sony's line.

Have fun!

Wish there was a professional technician around my parts of the woods who could do a real calibration but there are none and it's way expensive!

I've been busy with "basic setup calibrations" (see website) that are designed for folks that wish to have their TV's perform well, but are not completely persnickety when it come to a totally accurate gray scale.

This Doug, (above) may be able to help you.

Default Sony BRAVIA V-Series KDL-52V5100 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

I read several reviews and test it myself, I found out that Sony KDL52V5100 LCD HDTV is very easy to set up (you can use HDMI and optical audio cables), the picture quality is excellent (it may change a little from extreme side view) but the contrast and brightness is amazing even you view it from the sideway

Default hey guys..

i'm looking for some help in properly calibrating my Sony Bravia KDL-40S5100.....

what picture settings would make my unit really show its true potential...its currently set up in a large well lit bedroom...

i'm using Optimum's 1080i hd cablebox..the strange thing is the hd programing from optimum looks better with component video/audio cables than it does with hdmi...is this a result of wrong settings somewhere??

the audio is running of the Sony Bravia DAV-HDX285..connected with a hdmi cable..

any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated

Make sure the HD box is set to output 1080i. Cablebox tech is still a few years behind and might be defaulting to 480i upon initial fireup.

Using the component cables theoretically should not produce a different image than HDMI. Component can perfectly reproduce 1080i data. Your 1080p Sony upsamples (scales) the 1080i data to its native 1080p resolution. This scaling may actually help to soften the compression artifacts prevalent in cable and to a lesser degree satellite/OTA sources. The HDMI signal, IIRC on the S series, is not scaled to 1080p. Check the data for your display to be sure. In any event, if you like the image better with component out of the cablebox, go with that interface.

Set the black and white levels as described on my website or on this site for optimum performance in your actual viewing environment. You might want to use one of the user presets for night time viewing as well.

If a blu-ray player is connected, then use of the HDMI cable is preferable as the display will render 1080P from the player ever so slightly better than component.

Good bang for the buck display!
