Default Hitachi 42PD9700U & Sharp BD-HP20

Hi all,

Guys I'm really sorry that I'm just diving in will a cry for help, but I just don't know what to do with my tv and dvd player.

I've had the TV for a couple of years now, and the Blu-ray player for a few months, but I'm just not convinced I can see any difference in quality when I play blu-ray discs on it. I also have an Xbox which I can see a clear difference between mine and my mates' who aren't on HD TVs, but I'm not convinced I'm getting any increase in quality with the Blu-ray player.

I've got it rigged up through a good quality HDMI cable so it should be ok.

I've had the same BR DVDs over at a mate's house who has just bought a new HD TV and Blu-ray player and the same DVD looks amazing through his in comparison to mine. Even watching normal DVDs on his looks better than the Blu-ray on mine.

Am I missing something with regards to settings? I know the TV is only 1080i and not 1080p, but surely that shouldn't make this much difference...?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

Kristian

Well first of all it is not really a 1080TV. Hitachi was famous for making a non-standard resolution for their TV's which lead to rectangular pixels instead of square. A standard 1080 resolution is 1920x1080 whereas your TV has a resolution of 1024x1080 which really doesn't fall into the HD realm. Because even a 720 TV has at a minimum resolution of 1280x720.

So that is why your mates TV looks better than yours and why Blu-ray movies don't look as good as they should. I would consider replacing that TV.

Hope this helps.

L2w has provided accurate data once again.

If all user controls are set to the best of the displays abilities to perform, that is all you are going to get no matter what you feed it.

On the other hand... if you view the display from any distance over 8' or so, the difference in clarity will become less of an issue. In other words, you might consider the display for another room where casual viewing is the norm rather than HD film viewing.
