Can't see dark scenes

Hi everyone, I've got a 46" Sharp Aquos TV. I've been trying to calibrate the colors and can't seem to get it right. I put it back to factory settings a few times to start from scratch, but it's still not right. I mean the color of the TV itself is beautiful, but faces are a little red for me, but my biggest gripe is the dark scenes. They're near impossible to see. It's definitely not the movie because I have another 40" LCD that I've watched the same movie using the same DVD player and it's fine. I've also tried using the THx optimizer and had trouble with it. The very first screen was a white color adjustment where it was suppose to have 4 different shaded white boxes, but it just looked like 1 big white box, so I think I definitely have some problems here. Any suggestions?

Yes. It's called a calibration disc. For openers, you need to bump up the brightness (black level) a click or two so you can see shaded objects and then decrease the contrast until you see detail in white images. You may need to back the color setting down a click. then get a Spears and Munsil disc from Oppo or Amazon or ? and follow the simple directions and you will be a happy camper.

Make sure you don't have a dark feature turned on, my LCD has a dark, darker and darkest setting. There's also HDMI black level adjustment, not sure if your set has one though. Definitely get Spears & Munsil disc from Amazon or Oppo Digital.

What are your settings? Aside from going out and buying the disc and calibrating your tv yourself, you might want to see if CNET has your tv reviewed, they often list what they found to be the optimum settings for each tv that they have reviewed. Also might try Tweaktv.com who also post what they find to be optimum settings.

Saturation (color) may be set too high. It may look fine with test disks and gel strips, but decoder errors are still in the loop on todays tv's to "accentuate" vivid color reproduction.

First, take a look at my website for a quick "how to" basic cal. Getting the B/W levels spot on with the room lighting set to your liking, is the most important thing you can do with a new display.

All of the other posters have given good data as well, so take your time and have some fun.
