Default what to believe?

When calibrating my tv( sony 40Z5500) for the second time after two monds, I noticed something. I used the THX menu from the incredibles. When using the normal test for brightnes I go to 49 but when using the advanced test I have to go to 51. How is it possible that there two different outcomes while using the same testprogramme. And also with DVE bluray version I says 50( the test twithe the pluge) on the brightness. Has someone an explenation for this. Which of the three to use?

Use the middle one, 50.

One of the issues with some displays is that the user controls may be a tad "notchy" or rougher than we would like.

In your case, make sure that the ambient light in the room is stable to you liking and then be a bit flexible with different dvd's/bd's. Be prepared to stop a film in still mode when a dark scene is up and then use the black level control to bring out the darkest layers of the film while keeping the blacks as black as your display allows.
