Default HD DVD recording using VC-1/MPEG4 on existing DVD-R/RWs?

I just read that NEC has a new chip that allows 16X DVD recording on all DVD±R/RW/RAM formats. Which got me thinking. What's the possibility that HD DVD allows using existing recordable DVD media to record in HD as an option? Since DL DVDs are starting to get cheaper it would make for nice HD recordings using VC-1/MPEG4. Of course this all depends on how much SL HD DVD-Rs initially cost.

I think that's all good, but isnt the point of the new HD-DVD disks the increased storage capacities needed for 2 1/2 hour HD movies?

Actually no, the point of HD DVD is to be able to store many hours of HD content using VC-1/MPEG4. However this doesn't prevent the use of VC-1/MPEG with existing DL DVD-Rs. As an example T2 Extreme Edition is HD and is 2.5 hours long but it only requires about 5 GBs of space. With 8.5GBs of space from a DL DVD-R, you can fit a full 1080i movie on the disc. In other words you can use existing DL DVD-Rs for recording HD tv shows etc. This would be a nice option if blank 20GB SL HD DVD-Rs turns out to be more expensive than DL DVD-Rs which are currently about $4.

Like everything else in this arena, I'm sure the HD DVD-R's will be a bit on the exspensive side when they first appear, but will soon come into check.

What Guru is talking about with standard DL DVD-R's could happen, and probably should happen from the consumer's point of view- but my fear is that Toshiba and the rest of the HD-DVD consortium isn't going to want to promote any other blank format than their own- especially when you consider that the first generation of writeable media for HD-DVD is only going to be a 5-6 gig increase over current DL DVD's.

It will be interesting to see if any of the manufacturers takes a stab at burning for both formats next spring when the first burning set-top devices are released.

I belive dual layer DVD-R always well be more expensive that single layer HD DVD-R. However SL HD DVD-R is a LOT more atractive than SL DVD and the price shouldn't be much differnce...

I'm curious to know why you would expect HD-DVD media to be in the same price range as SL DVD...that seems awfully optimistic to me.
