hd dvd audio problem w/ optical and hdmi

I have had an A2 for awhile and run the feed from the player through an HDMI to my tv. I would like to run the sound through an optical cable to my surround sound receiver but for some reason I cannot get sound to run from the hd dvd player w/ an optical cable. When I hook my ps3 up via hdmi to the tv and optical cable to the receiver the surround sound comes out just fine, but when I try the same set up w/ the hd dvd player I cannot get any sound through the optical cable into the receiver. Are there any specific settings on the hd dvd player to get the audio to work through the optical or any suggestions for this problem. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

Try setting the HDMI output to PCM, and the optical to Bitstream.
