I agree L2W.

It is not like they will be coming out with new movies that might require the updates, but if it solves some issues (HDMI conflict, etc.) or like the A20, XA2, A30 which had jaggies introduced on AVC encoded movies with version 3.0, then it makes sense.

No, the firmware updates are cumulative but read the preceding reply.
I'll stick with 2.8 for now then.

Thanks, but I do get the occasional freeze or disc reading error.

Then by all means update to 4.0 as it is supposed to fix those kind of problems and eliminate problems with previous firmware releases. 4.0 has worked great for me on the players I have it installed.

Really? I have never had a disc freeze up during HD DVD playback. My only issue was from newer combo discs released last December and January. For some odd reason the HD DVD side would not work without the latest firmware, but after updating everything has worked fine.

Check some AVC encoded movies with your 2.8 firmware, as i heard there are some jaggies with those movies, but since you have a CRT @ 1080i you likely had no issue.

I would at least save it in case you get a new display.

I have loaded 4.0 on an HD-A30 and an HD-XA2 and played several discs, both formats on both players. My impression is things are working great and the jaggies have been fixed. I have intended to go to AVSForums and read about both players and see if there reports of issues, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Thanks for the feedback Chris. Are you going to be my guinea pig on the A20 also? I would like to make sure it improves things or at least doesn't cause issues before I try updating given the hassles I went through to finally get new players.

Now if only Toshiba would release firmware to support PAL playback.
