Well it looks like it updated OK. I popped in the DVD and got to the same point as last night when it froze again. This time, it doesn't show the error message. The whole screen is black. When I FF, I can see the arrows but it doesn't actual goes FF. The same goes with the menu items. It won't select to that particular chapter I was watching. At this point, I'm thinking it might be the disc, but upon looking, it doesn't appear to be scratched/gouged. I will clean it and see what happens. My lady and I have rented thousands of DVDs, with some of them in a lot worse shape than this but still plays. I don't know if the HD-DVD is finicky or not with sensitivity.
Let's try it one more time and see what happens |

I have recently purchased HD-A2, I already had Onkyo Home Theatre with DTS. The firmware in the player is 1.3, What is suggested, should I update the firmware, where can I find the changes between firmware 1.3 and 2.7 which is now available.
Thanks |

Adds support for web-enabled content on some of the latest HD DVD discs (Blood Diamond, Evan Almighty, Transformers, etc), addresses a number of HDMI/DVI issues and various playback issues, adds RGB standard/enhanced options.

Thanks for your quick response, I think I will upgrade. I am very much afraid as I have received this HD DVD Player after a great exercise, as this type of player is not available in India and I am do not want to loose it by some mistake and rendering the player of no use.

I find it curious and a little disconcerting that I would have to 'update my firmware' on a current model fresh out of the box. Isn't this a 'finished' format?
I know it hasn't occurred to any tech-heads here, but if this format is to gain any broad support Toshiba et. al. will have to realize that there will be some who don't have internet access or maybe not even have a computer at all. |

BOTH formats need to be updated, and the HD-A2 is the older model so it is not as up to date from the factory as the current 3 series models.
I agree that updates should not be required but they are for BOTH formats. The difference is that Toshiba makes it relatively painless to do IF you do have internet access. If you do not, they include a card in the box to automatically get them sent to you. It is adviseable to call them though to get it even faster.

The format is still relatively new. It'll get to a point I'm sure where very few firmware updates will ever be needed.

When updating the hd-A3 do you just plug the ethernet connection to the cable modem. Do you have to be on your computer and signed on to your internet provider

Firmware updates are a good thing so that new features can be added. I now look for products that allow updates so that quirks/glitches can be fixed for my HDTVs also.

Really glad I found this thread, cuz I tried downloading the firmware, and burning it via ezmedia creator 6, and 9, on 3 different computers about 20 times. Waisted a about 5 disks before I switched to RW, and even then I was unsuccessfull after many tries. I downloaded the freeby DeepBurner the original post sugested, and it worked first time.
