Updating the firmware on your new HD DVD player is a lot easier than you may think. The latest updates often include playback fixes and new features for some of the latest HD DVD titles that include improved web-enabled extras, such as those found on Transformers, Blood Diamond or Evan Almighty, for example.
You can download your new firmware from either the Canadian or American sites below: Toshiba HD DVD Firmware ISO Downloads - Canadian Site Toshiba HD DVD Firmware ISO Downloads - American Site Current Versions: HD-A1 -- Firmware update 2.3 Date: July 3, 2007 HD-XA1 - Firmware update 2.3 Date: July 3, 2007 HD-A2 -- Firmware update 2.5 Date: Sept 12, 2007 ** HD-A20 - Firmware update 2.5 Date: Sept 12, 2007 ** HD-XA2 - Firmware update 2.5 Date: Sept 12, 2007 ** ** Firmware 2.5 Update Notes:
ISO Burning Software: There is a FREE version of DeepBurner that will burn ISO images. Click here to download. Since the firmware filesize is relatively small, please be sure to burn at a slow speed. This can often ensure a solid, error-free burn. Firmware Update Instructions: 1) Confirm that the player is connected to a television. Turn on the television and select the appropriate video input on the television to view the player. (I.e. Video 1, Video 2, HDMI etc…) 2) Turn the player on by pressing the “On / Standby” button” on the unit or with the remote control. 3) Open the player’s tray by momentarily pressing the “Open / Close” button on the front of the unit. 4) Place the firmware update disc on the tray and close the disc drawer. The player will indicate “Loading” as the firmware update disc is initially read. 5) The players front display will indicate “Ver Up” and the on-screen display will indicate “Do you want to update the version?” 6) If “Yes” is not already selected (Highlighted in yellow) select “Yes: by using the cursor left button on the remote control. 7) Press “OK” on the user remote. 8) If you receive a message “Error code : 2007c5c2” on the TV, this indicates you are using an incorrect firmware version. You should contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-319-6684 to obtain the correct firmware version. 9) After approx 2 minutes the players front display will indicate the progress of the firmware update in steps. It will first indicate “STEP 1/5” then “STEP 2/5”, “STEP 3/5”, “STEP 4/5” and finally “STEP 5/5”. 10) The player will stay on “STEP 5/5” for an extended period of time. During the update process the ON/STANDBY Led will flash between red and blue indicating that the update is in progress. 11) The complete firmware update process will take approximately 30 minutes. DO NOT UNPLUG or POWER DOWN the Player during the update process or it may result in damage to the HD DVD Player. The disc tray will automatically open upon completion of the firmware update. The unit will shut off with the tray in the open position. 12) Remove the update disc from the tray. 13) Turn the player on by pressing the “On / Standby” button on the front of the unit. The disc tray will automatically close. 14) The firmware update is now completed. Updating Your Toshiba HD DVD Player Firmware. Why update it? Think of it as a driver update for computer hardware, or a new updated version of your favorite software program for Windows. It makes things work better and may even have new features added. With HD DVD players the latest updates often include playback fixes and new features for some of the latest HD DVD titles that include improved web-enabled extras, such as those found on Transformers, Blood Diamond or Evan Almighty, for example. Updating the firmware on your new HD DVD player is a lot easier than you may think. You can update your player to the latest firmware by either 1) the Setup menu (connecting the player to the internet since there is an ethernet port on the back of all HD DVD players for this), or by 2) manually downloading the firmware ISO and burning it to a CD ROM. If you're a little wary of doing something like this yourself, ask a techie friend who is familiar with this sort of thing to give you a hand. How To Find Out What Firmware Version You Already Have Stop any movie that may be playing and press Setup on the remote. In the Setup menu go to General --> Maintenance --> Update. It will tell you in the first set of numbers what the version is, for example 1.5/T20M. The firmware version in this example would be 1.5. To Update Using The Setup Menu First, go into the internet section of the Setup menu (Ethernet --> DHCP) and do the following: 1) Turn DHCP to ON 2) Turn DNS to ON 3) Move cursor to highlight the Confirm button in Yellow and press OK Exit out of the setup menu and remove any disc that may be in the HD DVD player. Turn off the power and then turn it back on. You should then be able to update to the latest firmware via the Setup menu (General --> Maintenance --> Update) and then following the on-screen instructions. The following events may interrupt the firmware update process and cause the player to malfunction.
To Update By Downloading The ISO Firmware ISO Burning Software: Use a CD only to burn the ISO image and not a DVD. If you do not have any burning software there is a FREE version of DeepBurner that will burn ISO images (works on Windows 95/98/2000/NT/ME/XP/Vista x86/Vista x64 and is virtually compatible with ANY CD/DVD burner). Click here to download. Since the firmware filesize is relatively small, please be sure to burn at a slow speed as this can often ensure a solid, error-free burn. Also remember to select Burn ISO image and to not just create a data CD. If your burning software has the option, choose "Disc At Once" instead of "Track At Once". If the firmware update is in a .ZIP file, extract it and burn the large .ISO file image to disc. You can download the firmware update from either the Canadian or American Toshiba websites. Make sure you go into the internet section of the setup menu and
1. Turn HDCP to ON 2. Turn DNS to ON 3. Move cursor to highlight the Confirm button in Yellow and press OK Press setup twice to exit out of the setup menu and turn off the player. Then turn it back on and you should be good to go with the internet setup for not only the updates, but for the internet interactivity too!

Yep! Tip: Slow-burn the file. It isn't large so it won't take a long time, but slow-burning is often much more reliable.

Ok, I can burn an .iso disk and downloaded the firmware, but the .zip file contains two .iso's. Just to make sure, I will need to burn both of them correct?

Just make sure you burn it as an IMAGE file. This is VERY important!

Yeap, Just updated 1 of my new players now. Just go in maintenance menu and check your current version like Midnight said. Since the new update just came out in September, almost a sure thing that a firmware update is needed. Mine was version 1.5.. If your connecting up to cable DSL router, just do what PFC said and make the HDCP/DSN change. Also pick your connection speed/type and choose update in the maintanance screen. Took me about 10 minutes with DSL. It went up to 36 cycles on the menu screen... And you can still use it without the update.. It just has a few bug fixes for playback issues with some HD DVD's and a few inhancements. But always a good idea to keep it updated..
