Press Release Source: Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C.

Toshiba Delivers Its Third Generation HD DVD Players Taking the High Def Movie Experience to a Broader Consumer BaseWednesday

September 5, 7:00 pm ET
Unrivaled Features, Affordable Prices, and Exciting New Promotions Add Up to Unprecedented Benefits For HDTV Consumers This Fall

CEDIA, DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") revealed its third generation HD DVD players at the CEDIA show today rolling out its most advanced, affordable line of HD DVD players with outstanding functionalities and Web-enabled network capabilities of the HD DVD format. Gearing up for the new line to hit shelves this fall, Toshiba also announced new HD DVD marketing initiatives and consumer promotions, including a season-long promotional campaign with NBC Television Station Group for Sunday Night Football broadcasts, a free two movie bundle with third generation players and a new five free HD DVD movie promotion.

"We have raised the bar yet again with the unmatched interactive capabilities and state-of-the art video and audio performance of our third generation players," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "Web-enabled network capabilities, available on HD DVD, illustrate how Toshiba is delivering on its commitment to provide consumers with the ultimate home entertainment experience in high definition. With this new line, a growing base of HDTV consumers can now look forward to an unrivaled home theater experience this fall."

Toshiba Third Generation HD DVD Players

Toshiba's third generation family starts with the entry level HD-A3 player featuring 1080i output capability. The other two new models, Toshiba's HD-A30 and HD-A35, will output 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080p), the highest HD signal currently available. Both models are capable of outputting signals at 1080p/24 frames per second so consumers can enjoy movies in their native frame rate. The HD-A30 and HD-A35 models also feature "CE-Link" (HDMI(TM)-CEC), allowing two-way control between the HD DVD player and a TV through an HDMI connection.

With a new slim design, Toshiba's third generation players have a cabinet that is approximately 1/4-inch slimmer than second generation models. All of Toshiba's HD DVD models are backward compatible allowing users to enjoy their libraries of current DVDs and CDs while improving the picture quality of regular DVDs by upconverting them through an HDMI connection to near high definition quality.

New HD DVD Promotions

To further drive HD DVD sales this fall, Toshiba also announced today a number of exciting new marketing initiatives and promotions. To communicate the benefits of HD DVD to millions of HDTV owners, Toshiba announced a season- long promotional campaign with the NBC Television Station Group and its broadcasts of Sunday Night Football with Bob Costas and Tiki Barber. This includes 30 second HD DVD ads, web sponsorships promoting the format, as well as special on-air vignettes that will build awareness and educate consumers about HD DVD throughout the holidays and into 2008.

In addition, in order to allow consumers to enjoy the HD DVD experience right out of the box, Toshiba is offering consumers free movies with the purchase of their third generation players. With Toshiba's new bundle promotion, consumers will take home the highly acclaimed HD DVDs "300" from Warner Home Video and "The Bourne Identity" from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

"Warner is excited to offer consumers who purchase the new Toshiba HD DVD players the opportunity to own '300'," said Dorinda Marticorena, SVP Worldwide High Definition Media, Warner Home Video. "Not only is it the best selling HD DVD title to date, but it is also one of the most advanced titles with regard to new and innovative Hi Def features, both on the disc itself and through web connectivity. We believe that with the initial sales of "300", and this promotion, more than a half million consumers will own "300" on HD DVD by the end of this year."

"Now is an exciting time to buy an HD DVD player, with a blockbuster title like 'The Bourne Identity' in the box at retail," said Craig Kornblau, President, Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "Toshiba is leading the way in bringing high definition home, and at prices that will fit in any home theater. By offering The Bourne Identity, in addition to Toshiba's 'Five Free' offer, we're giving consumers an amazing deal."

In addition to its bundle promotion, Toshiba announced "The Perfect HD Offer," which will begin on October 1st 2007 and continue until February 28th 2008. As a result, with the purchase of any Toshiba HD DVD player, consumers will be able to select five HD DVD titles for free, from a selection of 15, via a mail-in offer. Full offer details will be available at http://www.toshibahddvd.com.

Toshibas marketing strategy is gonna be hard to top. If they lower prices at the holiday season plus cheap chinese players they could move some hardware and along with that software. They stated a half million copies of 300 by years end thats impressive. We'll see.

So the A3 will be less than $300 and you get two movies that almost anybody would want along with the 5 free, wow. That pretty much means the A3 will start selling for almost the lowest price the A2 reached.

This is truly an amazing offer. What impresses me is that WB is really stepping up to the plate for HD DVD by including their blockbuster of the year....basically sacrificing the future sales of this movie. Has anybody seen King Kong in the Amazon top 100 since it's been included with the add-on? It will be interesting to see if WB will make an equal sacrifice for Blu-ray.

Also extending the 5 free by rebate with expanded selection is excellent news. HD DVD is definitely NOT playing around and have already proven to me that they are ready for the big Q4 coming up.

The A3 will be selling very well indeed, especially in conjunction with normal online discount and other promotions. I have never been so optimistic about HD DVD.

This is great news, but I have to admit, I was expecting a bit more of a right cross or an upper cut type of announcement!

Was there any news on a BD counter move?

Personally, I think Toshiba should have waited to make this announcement as it may spur the BD-A into action and actually still give them enough time to put something together by the holidays. Impressive I must say, but there seems to be no mention of an HD-XA3 high end model. With Onkyo or some other company introducing a high end model, have they simply decided to abandon that segment?

I don't think Toshiba is too worried about Blu-ray coming up with better deals than this. I think that have a lot of cash on hand and are ready to bleed Sony dry.

Good point about the non-XA3 announcement. Could be that Toshiba is sacrificing the high end market in the interest of getting others in the game. If so, it's an excellent idea, IMO, but we'll have to wait and see. Maybe Robert knows something about this.

Anyway, still more news coming...

It is an awesome idea because it will encourage other CE makers to enter this arena.

They pretty much have to announce it now if they are going to start selling the 3rd gen players this month. Just before Thanksgiving would be a great time to offer a $50 to $100 discount promo. Now that would be a nice shot BD-A couldn't miss or match very easy.

Sony will be dropping the price of the S300 by another $50-100.00 for the Holidays I am fairly confident of this. They are doing that IPO so they can find the money to do it, but I do not think they have the deep pockets that the HD DVD group has.

I do think Toshiba will not be coming out with a XA3 for exactly the reasons mentioned. I also think it is a very smart move, but might give the BD fanatics the excuse that Toshiba is losing money on their players because the other mfg are so much more money. It is BS, but you know they will say it anyway.

I wonder if anyone realizes how significant the Sony IPO is?

Japanese companies do not make a decision to offer privately-held stock to the public lightly, as it reduces their control over their business.

Based on what some of the financial people are saying, it sounds like a bit of a scam:

``We are preparing to sell Sony Financial stock to the public this fiscal year or later,'' said Atsuo Omagari, a Tokyo- based spokesman for parent Sony. ``We can't comment on the details of timing, the amount of shares we plan to sell, or how we will spend the money.''

Masaaki Konoo, Sony Financial's head of investor relations, declined to comment. Nomura spokesman Kimiharu Suzuki and JPMorgan spokeswoman Mika Watanabe also declined to comment.

The firm needs to raise funds to expand because ``Sony Financial is getting bigger,'' Hiromichi Fujikata, the company's executive vice president, said in Tokyo on May 25.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...Zs&refer=japan

So they are raising cash because Sony Financial is growing and needs capital and certainly not in order to bail out the PS3--oops--``We can't comment on how we will spend the money.''

Well, all we have to do is wait and see what blu-ray Hunt does to spin the news. I can just imagine his next blog...........

So long as the high end Onkyo player is more reasonably priced than the $2000 Denon BDP, i'll be happy.

Awww but I already own 300 and the Bourne Identity.

Oh well I was planning on buying a Venturer model anyways when they come out as it is cheaper and will support a cheap brand trying to make a buck or so here and there.

P.S. Speaking of non-Tosh brand HD DVD players (Venturer, Onkyo, Integra). . . do they come with the 5 free deal or any deal for that matter?

nevermind, AVS has a blurry image of the ad with the new movies, speculation is....

1. Aeon Flux
2. Babel
3. Black Rain
4. Charile and The Choloclate Factory
5. Darkman
6. Firewall
7. The Frighteners
8. Full Metal Jacket
9. Hulk
10. The Italian Job
11. Pitch Black
12. Syriana
13. The Thing
14. TMNT
15. U2: Rattle and Hum

Not too bad, but overall, I like the original lineup better. Though I would've really liked The Thing on my promotion. Oh well, I'll have to go buy it
