Bitrate means nothing. Does not matter what it is on either Format. The fact still stands that Blu-Ray is unfinished. I can argue that a 30GB HD DVD movie looks better or equal to a 50GB BD movie.

Both formats have differences, but nothing to go nuts about. Though HD DVD's interactive qualities are 2nd to none.

When you look a movie from fox, sony or diznee where they are using the full biterate thats where you will find the difference. The f4 silversurfer is the most beautiful video I have ever seen. That with pcm audio it the holy grail of home theatre.Bluray guys do not want to take a step backwords to hddvd we are dreaming about starwars in high bitrate video and true lossless pcm audio. Hd dvd can not deliver this kind of quality period.(unless they redesign the format) so never say never.
He is a troll and is full of it. He knows (or should if he knows anything) that:

BD was designed with that extra storage space BECAUSE it originated as a recording tech before AVC (mpeg4) or VC-1 came along. It was designed for the space/bandwidth hog MPEG2. They also wanted to avoid licensing of the HD audio codecs and opted to use the space/bandwidth hog uncompressed LPCM too.

THIS is the reason it came with the higher space/bandwidth in the spec. It NEEDED it for how they planned to do video & sound with it.

By the way, when the TL HD51 disc comes and possibly the DL HD34 they will get an automatic bandwidth increase just because the data is closer together on the 17GB per layer. It has 13.33% more density so it will pick up a 13.33% increase in bandwidth just because of this.

Either format is fine. Both produce great picture. HD DVD is now getting into 1080P levels with their newer models at lower prices. Neither is ultimately cheaper than the other if you go spec for spec but the real question is what movies do you want to watch if you can't afford the dual format player?
HD DVD- Universal & Paramount exclusive
Blu ray- Sony(Columbia), Fox, Disney & Pixar exclusive

Warner Bros and New Line are neutral at the moment.

IMHO, the average consumer sees SD DVD's, even on their HD sets, as being "good enough". DVD's won over VHS, not so much because of picture quality, but because of dumb things like DVD's don't need to be rewound after viewing. HD DVD's don't have much of a convenience improvement over SD DVD's.

Go with HD I Have just brought a Toshiba HD E1 from Crampton and Moore (internet) for £179.99 with 5 free HD DVD, although this player isn't the latest player from Tosh it's still a bargin for HD beginners. It will also play SD DVDs with built in up scaling up to 1080i so makes your old DVD's look almost as good as HD DVD's, 1 x HDMI socket and 2 x USB sockets and 1 x free HDMI cable. 300 looks great on this player, the sound is excellent have linked it up to my home cinema via optical connection, sound is even better now

Hope that helps and good luck

300 looks the same on either format. It really comes down to what other films you want to watch. Another way to look at it is actual films than studios
Blu Exclusive
Die Hard
Spiderman
Simpson's
The Star Wars Trilogy (when Lucas decides to release them)
007 franchise

HD DVD Exclusive
The Bourne Trilogy
Fast and the Furious Trilogy
Matrix (for now, Warner is releasing on Blu Ray in the near future)
Mission Impossible ( You can still find the Blu-ray edition if you want it)
Transformers
Back to the Future (When Zemeckis gets onboard)

The Speilberg films are up in the air at the moment as he isn't a fan of HD DVD and has had his PR correct statements made by Universal. He may be an individual who goes dual format if he decides. Close Encounters which was a Columbia studio release is coming out on Blu Ray in Dec I believe but they are owned by Sony now. It will be interesting to see what route he goes. Either way, I will have them.
If you have a 1080P capable screen, get a 1080P player unless you really can't afford one. $399 gets you a great player for either format.

I'd avoid Crampton and Moore like the plague. Their customer service stinks and the woman called Paula who dealt with me was very rude and disrespectful.

I bought a £800 LCD TV that developed a fault 3 months outside it's warranty. I sent letters recorded that went unanswered that they claimed they never got yet according to Royal Mail web site they were all signed for!

This woman kept telling me to get in touch with the manufacturer which under the Trade Description Act it is the retailers responsibility to sort out any faults and NOT the manufacturer!

Eventually after getting no where with this incompetent company I did get sorted through Samsung who was brilliant.

I'D TOTALLY STAY AWAY FROM CRAMPTON AND MOORE... I FOR ONE WILL NEVER EVER DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN! THEY'RE SHOCKING.

Blu Ray all the way. Especially right now. Why would you buy into a dead technology? Besides those red cases give me a headache. Yuck.

Did you read the last few posts? This thread has been dead for a year and a half. Or are you still living in the past? I recommend either reading first what you are responding to or moving on into the present, whichever the case may be.

Default I'm already running blu ray, but...

I can't wait for my HD A2. I haven't had a chance yet to live in the past, but I will when my player finally comes through Ebay. I heard that the DVD upscaling on the HD A series is even better than my Panny BD 35.

LOL we have to leave something behind to give the next few generations the documented evidence and thus the capability to learn from our collective mistakes
