Last night I was able to take my wife out to show her the different HD DVD players and blu-ray. We went to a game shop and they had an x-box 360 core system for $299. What's the difference between the core system and the rest? Do you really need to have a 60GB hard drive? Would it be similar to the old x-box where it didn't have a hard drive on it?
Also I was looking in the newspaper and I didn't catch the company, but they're giving away 5 DVD's of your choice and then 2 DVDs they choose (Hell Boy and Casino Royale). I love the PS3, but would be willing to go with the X-box because of the price, even though the PS3 comes with free DVD's. Which do you guys think is better? (Minus the whole blue-ray vs. HD DVD war thing just simply gaming wise). |

For pure gaming? The 360 has a bigger catalog of games, just look at the game available and also notice the ones you might want to play.
The bigger hard drive is really for those that want to download content, movies, demo games, etc. I have both systems and have yet to download anything, so I am not the one to ask about the importance of it. The 360 core system does NOT have a hard drive. I believe it comes with one wired controller. It is not WiFi. To add the hard drive, add around $75-100. None of the 360's are Wifi out of the box. I had to buy a wifi adapter at $99 for that option. So, for the 360 core sytem to have some of the features the PS3 has, the 299 price will grow to... umm around $499. Then if you want to get the Addon, add another $199 to the price. Then, if you want the wireless controllers for the 360, they are about $40 each If you have no need for wifi or hard drive.. the core system is a good deal. The PS3 is a good deal when comparing all of the add-ons. You have to decide what you want the system to do... will you be playing more games or watching movies? The PS3 is a good system. How's that for non-biased from an HD DVD fan-man?

Pretty good job...
It's going to be for more of watching movies then gaming now, but in the future hopefully after I graduate from college, more gaming than movie watching. I want an HD DVD player, but the wife wants to get a gaming system. I figure this is the best way. I know the PS3 comes capable of playing Blu-ray, but does that mean it wouldn't play our old DVDs? Wireless controllers are cool, but I could just get the core system and then work my way up. I don't want/need a hard drive for the 360. I pretty much want something with amazing graphics and is able to play HD DVD's. I know the 360 has to get an extra player to be able to play the HD DVD's. I've always been a HUGE fan of Playstation because I like the way the controllers feel and what not, but I just feel as if the 360 is a better deal all around. |

Yeah but he forgot that the xBox's are breaking down everywhere. Plus you have to buy the HD DVD player for another $179 for movies whereas the pS3 already includes the Blu-ray player!

The xbox ad on is now 179.99 and comes with universal remote and copy of king kong and 5 free hd dvd movies from a choice of 15 titles. starting August 8th. Go with Xbox 360 for both. I have both systems and Im very unsatisfied with Ps3 selection of games I must say. Xbox online gameplay and selection is there.

As a gaming platform, at this moment in time, the 360 is by far the best option of the 2.
As a movie platform, I'd recommend checking out the releases on both formats and seeing which lineup you prefer. I wouldn't worry too much about either platform "dying" right now, as by the time that ever happens, the alternative format will have dropped in price and a stand alone will be a viable option anyway. As for reliability, you get 3 years warranty now with a 360 console so you do have piece of mind. Wal Mart have just reduced the Xbox 360 Premium to $350 so it would be $520 for that with the HD DVD drive and 5 movies as well, and a media remote. One thing alot of people also forget in this, is that the Xbox 360 includes the High Definition AV cable in the box, it is a seperate purchase on the PS3 (or at least it is here) which does add more ontop of your initial investment. |

the xbox 360 is the better option ATM, because the PS3 is still waiting on some hopeful titles.
If you buy the 360 premium, because the core, with no HD, is practically useless for everything except playing cd's, and the hd dvd player you get Xbox 360 console w/chrome finish 20 gig hard drive wireless controller xbox 360 headset 1-3 free games, depending on your deal hd dvd player king kong hd dvd 5 free hd dvd's I might be missing something, but even I think thats a good buy |

Ask your wife what is more important now-gaming or HD video.
Gaming it's the 360- large selection and the best live gaming arena. You have to have a hard drive to save games. DL Hd movies,TV etc from Xbox live. Regarding HD video I'd wait till things become clearer. The 360 does a great job of up converting standard DVD's. If HD video is important as price look at some of the stand alone HD-DVD players or consider the investment in a PS3 for the Blu-ray and wait for the PS 3 games catalog to expand.

That is PURE FUD BS. I have had mine since they came out and have had NO trouble with it. There have been some problems with them, yes, but M$ is fixing them under warranty and the % of breakdowns are not as high as you are saying, please don't take the headlines and turn it into propaganda for the PS3. I have had more problems with my PS3 than the 360. Heck, I cannot power up my PS3 unless I insert a disc. The power button blinks 3 times them shuts back off. My 360 has worked all the time, through carrying it to Russia, frying the power supply cuz of 50Hz system, making a makeshift fix by using a 400 watt computer power supply. The thing will power right up and play my games a year and a half later.

I'm not planning on buying one of the two until around Thanksgiving or after X-mas. I'm saving up the $$ so that maybe I can buy my wife a Wii for X-mas. One thing about the PS3 is that I already have a PS2 and a ton of games so with the X-box 360 I have 0 games from X-box. I would need to start building up a collection or just simply buyin 360 games. I'm hoping I can get a good deal on the day after thanksgiving for a Wii for my wife.
I'm pretty sure I'm leaning towards the 360 core. I don't need a hard drive or anything like that because I'm not that crazy about downloading stuff off X-box live. If you have the core are you still able to play on the X-box live? Right now we are not capable of getting it because we don't have high speed internet. I'll probably slowly upgrade to the wireless controllers and stuff over time, but not immediately. |

So i'm sitting here telling my wife all the advantages of the 360 and how it plays DVD's out of the box. And she's like...i say you just go buy it..i was like umm what? And she was like you might as well enjoy it instead of waiting for it...but I'm not doing it until we have the money to pay cash...but atleast I know I can get it

As already stated, 360 is the best for gaming. You NEED A hard drive. Anyone that tells you otherwise doesn't have a 360 or has never checked out the arcade. Get the premium (or elite if you prefer - I personally am considering upgrading my hard drive as the demos keep filling it up).
Instead of the add on, consider the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. While the add on is a decent value, they stand alone player is a much better value for the extra $60 (get it on Amazon). And if you don't buy today, its likely it will go down by the time you buy it. By the time you are able to watch all the possible HD DVD movies you might enjoy, you should have been able to save up enough for a blu-ray player so you can enjoy those as well. PS - I have both 360 and PS3. I've only used a few downloadable games on the PS3 - haven't bought a single one. I have over 30 games for my 360.

I stated earlier that I don't play x-box live and don't have high speed internet so I wouldnl't need a hard drive. When the day comes that I do get x-box live wouldn't I be able to buy a hard drive for the x-box core?

I'm not a big fan of using a game machine (either the PS3 or Xbox 360) as a home theater player. That's my bias. Right now an Xbox 360 package to get roughly equivalent systems with the PS3 actually costs more than the PS3, but has more/better games and superior online capabilities (but I'm sure blu-boys will not agree). To me, both are overpriced...
