PFC5, thanks for you spot-on repsonse to Chris. He has nme on ignore so me responding to him is useless. He was the one running around screaming FUD FUD FUD to us, now he is the one doing, then saying it is fact.

Assuming he doesn't work for Sony, Chris truly believes that Blu-Ray would have been a successful format had HD DVD not intervened.

I don't fault him for that. I do think he is completely wrong and that the only format that had/has any chance of winning is HD DVD, but these are all opinions.

If BD could have come out of the gate with 50GB discs and great PQ and great AQ and a realistic price, they might have had a good chance, but they didn't do that and they are suffering for it. How else can one explain virtually identical disc sales (on an absolute basis, not some misleading percentage market share hoohah) with such a huge hardware advantage.

All HD DVD did to BD was show how good BD should have been--it's not Toshiba's fault that people aren't stupid and recognize marketing BS when they see it.

If the BDA couldn't come to the table with a completed, high-quality format, then they deserve whatever happens to them. It's just a shame that out of greed they chose to create a format war that may make *everybody* losers. When it was clear that HD DVD had a brought a higher-quality product to market sooner, the BDA should have backed down.

It is an absolute denial of reality to pretend the initial 25GB MPEG2 BD releases were as good as the 30GB VC-1 HD DVD releases in the same time frame. Or that the lame 1080p-kludged Samsung BDP-1000 was in the same league as the Toshiba players (oops, sorry, we have a bug which turned on the noise reduction, that's why it looks bad--but don't worry, as soon as we figure out how to turn it off, we'll probably offer a firmware upgrade ).

I gave you the benefit of doubt twice, but I seriously have a hard time believing you are 34 years old. Why not try growing up a little and then coming back?

Good info on BD+, PFC5! A classic example of overprotection if there ever was one. No way I'm ever owning a player that can be disabled remotely or by inserting the latest movie. At least one can decide to leave the player unconnected on the net, but inserting a movie and having in run code on your player to sniff out "irregularities" and carry out disabling enforcement is beyond appalling for me. It's way to easy for innocent consumers to have their players disabled thru some bug in the system (and there will be bugs, as always), but the point is invasion of privacy. It would be like renting the player, except you have to pay for it and use it conditionally (and hope there's no bugs).
