Default HD-A2 and Dual Format Disks

Well I finally did it! After months of browsing this forum I went and bought an HD-A2 at Best Buy ($399.99 with 4 free HD-DVD's of your choice plus 5 more from Toshiba, NOT BAD!!!). The first thing I did was upgrade the firmware to version 1.5 via ethernet port. Everything went great but now I try and play the HD-DVD combo disk of The Departed and it says the disk is not DVD format, it will not play the HD side at all. Is this a player issue or disk issue? Does anyone know? Also I have my A2 hooked to my TV with a HDMI to DVI cable because my Tv doesn't have HDMI and I use optical to my receiver because it too has no HDMI. Everything is good except the player displays "2 ch." on the display when I'm playing a Standard Definition DVD, but my receiver shows DTS digital 5.1 input. Anybody got any idea why the HD-A2 displays "2 ch." when I select 5.1? Long Live HD-DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on your player and welcome to the forum!

I haven't heard of any problems with The Departed. Have you tried cleaning the disc? Otherwise, I would exchange it for a new copy.

Others I'm sure will chime in on your audio setup. Have fun!

Thanks for the reply Bruce. I got The Departed to play but only 25% of the time. It will recognize the disk and then if you shut off the player and come back later it says the disk is not DVD format. I then turn the player off and on 2 or 3 times and then it will sometimes recognize it. I hope Toshiba addresses this in a future firmware update. This is my only complaint. THE HD-A2 ROCKS!!!!!!!! I can't believe how good the up-conversion is. They say the HD-XA2 is better because of the silicon Optix Reon processor, but I'd have to see it to believe it. I had a Sony up-converting DVD player before this and this just blows it away. The HD goes without saying, AWESOME!!! I LOVE MY HD-A2!!!

As Bruce stated, I would try swapping out that disc as well at BB since The Departed is not a problem disc from what i've heard. The reason your reciever is displaying DTS 5.1 is because you are using the optical SPDIF cable. What the Toshiba HD-DVD players do is send across the DD+ tracks on your movies to your reciever in DTS at the full 1.5mbps bitrate from my understanding. To listen to the HD audio formats like DTHD and DD+, you'll need to hook your HD-A2 to a reciever that is fully HDMI capable. Once you do that, the HD-DVD player will decode the formats internally and send it across in the form of LPCM.

As for why your player is displaying 2ch, someone else will have to answer that since I only have the HD-A1. On my player, you have to set the audio format in the audio menu which I set to 5.1ch for mine.

I have both the HD A2 and the Departed connected to my 1080p Sharp via HDMI, with NO PROBLEMS ever. Unless there's something uniquely wrong with your disc or your player.

New members who don't pay attention to the dates I think. It is interesting to see how an HD-A2 at $399 was a good deal just 8 months ago though

I was thinking the same thing. $399 plus four free movies.

I paid that but only got TWO movies in the store and the 5 from Toshiba and I thought it was a good deal then.

I wondered if the thread digging is to do with the "Similar Threads" box that appears at the bottom of some threads? Often the threads it lists are very old, it caught me out a couple of times when I was new.

I just stopped looking at those threads at the bottom BECAUSE they were old threads.

I am not liking all these old threads coming back for no good relevant reason. Come on new guys, look at the day BEFORE replying.
