Sweet, very reasonable prices for the features offered... Keep the prices coming donw!

How do Onkyo's compared sound wise to a Denon receiver? Music is just as important as home theater to me.

I saw that. I just bought an Onkyo 674 about a month ago, so I'm mildly annoyed, but I'll live. Im very pleased with the Onkyo I got.

The first two cheaper models are only video pass-through on the HDMI inputs so no joy on passing audio over HDMI to the receiver with them.

I also notice that they are all missing the DD+ decoders also.

Denon has announced that they will be producing AVRs with HDMI 1.3 this summer as well. I sent an email to Denon asking them if my receiver will be upgradeable to 1.3 but they did not respond. I am expecting that it would be... then I guess I'll have to wait for a projector capable of using true color.

With AVR's, it's always a better idea to compare specific models rather than make generalized statements about brands as a whole, but I'll go ahead and bend that rule a little bit for convenience's sake: In general, Denon is definitely the more popular brand of the two- but people in the know tend to pretty much equate the higher-end models from both brands fairly equally.

I'd worry more about matching the feature set of the amp itself to your needs within your price range rather than whose name is slapped on the front of the unit.

I'm very intrigued by the TX-NR905: Reon processing for video, Burr-Brown DACs, and a Toroidial transformer are all very high end features for a unit at that price.

I own both Onkyo, Yamaha, & Denon receivers and from my experience Onkyo would be third in my ratings with it being a toss up between Yamaha & Denon as to who would come in first place. Onkyo seems to be LESS conservative with their power ratings compared to Y & D, so you would want a higher rating of about 10% more with Onkyo compared to Y & D IMHO.

Power requirements are a big concern based on the efficiency of the speakers the receiver will be driving. Look for the DB rating for the "efficiency or sensitivity" rating in your speakers specs.

Generally a 3db increase in efficiency on one speaker compared to another will require HALF the power that the lower efficiency speaker will need. In other words, a speaker rated at 90db efficiency/sensitivity will only require half the power that an 87db rated speaker will need to achieve the same volume level.

Remember that you almost never can use more than half the rated amp/receiver power rating or else the distortion will go up dramatically and clipping can occur. This distortion and/or clipping is what can do the most damage to the speakers.

gotcha, thanks PFC5. Currently I'm using a Denon 987, but not set in stone (return period open still) which sounds great. It is quite a bit more though. Power ratings definitely has a big impact, I was powering with a cheaper receiver and I could tell a huge difference, bass wasn't tight, vocals sounded different, etc. So no complaints on the Denon whatsoever, best receiver I've used in my home but like I said it is pricey. I honestly don't care about all the bells and whistles. Just want High power and clean sound + HDMI for lossless. I really wish they had a 5.1 model for a little less.
Specs according to MFG:

Speaker System: Bass Reflex, Rear Vented
Recommended Amplifier Power: up to 200 watts RMS
Impedance: 8 ohms nominal
Minimum Impedance: 4 ohm
Frequency response: 40Hz-23000Hz +/- 3dB

Usable Bass Response: -10dB Anechoic @ 33Hz
Anechoic Sensitivity 89dB
2 speakers in a typical room: 92dB

I have the AVR-887 Denon which is I think is 20wpc less than your model. With my very efficient Klipsch speakers (93-95db rating) I never go higher than -20db with it and that is BLASTING the sound like in a theater.

4 ohm speakers draw a lot more power from a receiver/amp versus 8 ohm speakers, and further muddy the power requirements.

Yeah, my difference in sound quality was at low levels even. Something with more power definitely has an effect at low levels. The crappier older receiver can still drive them louder than tolerable but that isn't the point of listening of course.

I agree that there is nothing worse than listening to sounds at high volume that is loaded with distortion due to insufficient power. That is why the best thing is to get the power requirements correct first and foremost.

Personally, I think you should stick with the AVR-987 since you have 4 ohm speakers, but you could try out the AVR-887 which they sell at Circuit City and see id it will drive your speakers properly. It could save you a couple of hundred $$.

Good luck!

Thanks Sufs for the info.

I've been looking at upgrading to the 2700 yamaha, but the 805 Onkyo looks comparable and since I'm use to the Onkyo brand I will probably lean that way.

By the way, I couldn't get any of your links to work?

Onkyo's are priced well for the quality. I have owned 2 Onkyos (still own a TX-DS787 but it doesn't have HDMI ins or outs. I hafve been trying to sell it.
