Default HD DVD plugs into Circuit City

http://www.videobusiness.com/article....html?nid=2705

Quote:
With Blu-ray Disc title sales overtaking HD DVD movies, BD backers are declaring the high-definition DVD format war over. There are new signs, however, that HD DVD shouldn’t be counted out yet.

Among them: stepped up support for the format from Circuit City, a new Microsoft business-to-business Web site (www.thisishddvd.com) aimed at bringing independent program suppliers into the HD DVD fold and retailers’ belief that Toshiba player prices will soon drop, increasing their penetration.

At the start of the year, Circuit City stores, which traditionally have not carried Toshiba consumer electronics products, began stocking Toshiba’s second-generation set-top HD DVD players. The chain has carried BD players since last spring.
Now we just need to get Best Buy in on the fun.

That's a wonderful article. Especially since CC hasn't carried Toshiba products, it just shows you that they believe that HD-DVD isn't dead and that it will remain competitive. Look at how hot the A2/XA2 are selling right now, and it's clear that CC wants a piece of that HD pie. I just can't wait for the HD-A20 to hit as that player will probably sell quickly as well.

This is excellent news. And I am glad that CC got it (guess the reorg didn't scare HD DVD away). I support my CC . . .spent a bunch of money with them and received tremendous service. My salesman actually called me 3 days after my set arrived to make sure I was satisfied.

ANYTHING and I mean anything that can get HD DVD in front of the consumer, especially one that:

1. Has the software right in the store (impulse buying)

2. Has BD players also for sale and software to go with them.

#1 is self explainatory

#2 -Right now, today, there is a price advantage in favor of HD DVD. Both on the hardware . . . and the software.

HD DVD (and BD) are looking for a certain segment of the market; the owner of an HDTV. No HDTV . . .No HD DVD. CC can sell them the HDTV first and then add an option . . .HiDef DVD. Customer just spent a bunch of money . . .how much more will he go. $400 or $800.

When a customer hears those two numbers, he wants to know why one is 2 x the price of the other. Am I going to get double value? " well Mr customer, they both play HiDef DVD's " . . . at this moment the customer has become deaf. He is no longer hearing the salesman.

Price is the most powerful of all the sales tool. It appeals to the masses. And if anybody wants HD DVD to suceed, we need all the masses we can get. If the formats are within 90% of each other as far as PQ. . . .then price is the only deciding factor.

I found my CC to be well informed as I was dealing with a Magnolia Rep. . . .I know not all will feel this way and for anyone with a tale of whoa to tell about CC let me say this:

"Sorry you had a bad experience with CC. There are other stores you can shop at."
