Question how do iconnect hd dvd player to non-hd ready tv?

i just accidentally bought an hd dvd player for my daughter's birthday, online, before i realized it needs to connect to a hd tv which we don't have.

can i get some sort of connecting cables? i can't afford a new tv and the item has already shipped from amazon. it's a Toshiba SD-3950 Progressive Scan DVD Player -- any help appreciated. -bev

Default DVD player should work fine with your non-HD TV

Your progressive scan DVD player should work fine with your regular tv. I used a progressive scan player with my regular TV long before I bought my HD TV.

Look on the back of the TV to see what inputs it will accept, then find the matching inputs on the back of the DVD player.

The good news is that you already have a progressive scan DVD player for when you finally do get a HD TV.

She doesn't have a HD DVD player, only a progressive scan.

as i understand, hd dvd players are not out yet (probably the third time i posted this hehe), so saying progressive scan makes everything much more understandable

Your new DVD player is NOT a High Definiton. You don"t need a HDTV
set for that DVD player.
See the connection available in the back of your old TV set
and folow same connection to your DVD player.
All DVD players have three types of connections:
COMPONENT: Blue,Green,Red ,for highest pict quality (New TV only)
S Video, or YC (is a small rownd with 4 pin) better quality (New and some old TV"s).
And COMPOSIDE, 1yelow RCA connector. OK for all TV sets.

If one uses a progressive scan DVD player and regular DVDs on a HDTV how high is the resolution displayed on the TV?

If the HDTV does no upscaling...the image will be 480p. If your HDTV does have a built-in scaler, you should be able to pick 720p and/or 1080i. Then the question is how good of scaler is it? Some HDTVs are equipped with scalers that don't do a good a job and you end up seeing scale-up artifacts.
