Default Rich people?

I just read that both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are claiming victory of sales at CES. I don't know about HD-DVD, but if what Blu-Ray people are saying is true than I suspect there are many rich people out there. Even if the BD players sold are mostly PS3, I still consider it expensive and therefore points to lots of rich people. However now that LG is planning to release Dual Format, I expect I will be able to pick up cheaper BD player (no I don't mean the LG) very soon. Here's to hoping.

You need not be RICH to buy this stuff. I have guys working for me that come and brag about thier new PS3 / XBox and/or Game-- then at the end of the month they need a payroll "advance" to pay their rent.

It's a matter of priority not wealth. These same guys can by a carton of smokes-- but have to borrow $10 to buy formula or milk for the kid . . .

This is an expensive hobby. No (sane) poor person is going to spend $500 on an HD/BD player so status has nothing to do with it. It's not poor vs rich, maybe rich vs. richer. If I was sub-blue-collar, I'd be more worried about paying the bills than which format to buy.

This statement is so true. We all have our vices and our "addictions." In general, assuming we all have decent enough paying jobs, we're all able to buy nice things for ourself at least once every so often. Some people blow their money on cigs and alcohol, some on making their car looks more slick and faster, some have drug problems, some have collections of little action figures, some are obsessed with their landscape and putting in that new pool, and some people must wear top of the line name brand clothing at all times, owning far too many "name brand" or "designer" shoes and outfits.

My "obsession" is HT gear. If i have a spare $500, of course if there are no other PRIORITIES, the first place that $$$ is going is to more HT equippment, be it an upgrade, more HD DVDs, a couple new 360, etc. Call me crazy but that's just how it is

I'm not rich, but I did have to give up other hobbies to start taking up this one. I used to be into modding my vehicles for every last bit of horsepower, but have given it up since I can't afford to fund that and this one. The best thing with HD-DVD though, is that getting an incredibly high performance player is actually somewhat affordable at it's low price tag. The HD-A1 was known to be one of the best upconverting players on the market, and it appears to have now been surpassed by the new HD-XA2. As for CES, i'd like some hard numbers because neither side is going to admit defeat.

I'm not rich either. I use moonlighting money to buy my toys but lately I haven't been doing too much and I haven't bought any movies for a month.

Fortunately, only one format is for the rich and it's not HD DVD.

You are starting to slow down! You should be nearing the 3 digit mark for number of movies at the rate you were going at!

Yeah, I'm at 75 and holding. At least I have about 8 or so that I haven't seen, including MI2, MI3 and Superman Returns. I hope to get back on track next month, but only about 5 a month rather than 10 as before. But talk is cheap and knowing myself I'll probably buy like before (assuming HD DVD comes through with the goods).

Well, I can pull up 2 threads where you boasted that money was not a problem for you in owning both format players

You guys are absolutely right. As poor as I am I still managed to get HDTV and HD-DVD player and I still am not yet homeless. I guess I am doing something right.

We live in a MUCH different world these days. I mean, the video iPod was $400 a couple years ago and they sold like hotcakes. $400 is a good deal of money, but it just didn't stop people. Ten years ago, spending $100 on a nice CD Walkman would have been rubbing with the rich, but now you'll see some not-so-well-off kiddies with 30GB iPods while talking on their cells. Having to spend $100/game or $50/movie is not that far off I'm afraid.

I'm not RICH , but did spend alot of money on my home theater , and for me my A1 cost me $350 and it's the bigest WOW Factor for $350 that I can recall in recent memory , and as I've stated before I'm more impressed with the upscaling than I ever thought I would be . Can't remeber what year it was but I remember taking my three kids and wife to see " The Grinch " at a theater a few years back and walked out spending $60 + . Right there and then I told my wife were investing in a good home theater setup . This going to the movies crap is way out of hand . We have not been to a theater since and enjoy movie nights on a regular basis . Over all the best money we ever spent !
