Just got my new XA1 today, I used the hdmi cable for video and the 5.1 analogs for True HD. I watched Batman Returns, WOW, the pq was great and the HD sound was even better.

Congrats man! I'm glad to see you finally have the HD-DVD player now! If you want to enjoy some more DTHD goodness, also check out Phantom of the Opera, and End of Days. Be warned though that EOD appears to be a problem disc for many people out there on the 1st generation players. Universal is currently sending me a new copy of the movie as mine was skipping really bad with this movie.

Even if you don't like musicals, Phantom is worth a look as it sounds good. I also believe Superman Returns features a DTHD track as well.

The Superman Returns scenes about 30 minutes in (shuttle malfunction) were the best sounds EVER coming out of my HT system yet!

That DtHD soundtrack in SR is just WOW!

Just keep rubbing it in for those of us who don't have a reciever with analogue inputs!

Oh well, it will have to wait till next holiday for me, since I want to have enough money to do the setup with decent equipment. I could have done the sound system this year, except I started spending more money than any human should be allowed to spend on HD-DVD movies.

Sorry about that. I thought I was done being wowed by HD-DVD audio and then I watched this one.

I think it really helped that I now have a HDMI receiver so I get my rear surround back. I was really missing that with only 5.1. With the HDMI I get the rear matrixed, so it is back in use.

I would suggest that you get get a HDMI receiver when you do buy IF you have any plans to go above a 5.1 speaker layout. You do not have to do it all at once either. I bought things piece meal as I went along.

I definately don't have plans to go above 5.1, as I just don't have any room for an extra set of speakers above the 6 currently in use. My next system will probably utilize Bose cube speakers, because they are compact enough to fit while still delivering good audio quality with enough volume. I also have no idea where I would mount the side speakers, as that is prime walking space for me. HDMI recievers hopefully will be cheaper by the time i'm ready.

I would suggest you go with the small Klipsch 5.1 system long before going with Bose. They are almost as small, have MUCH better sound and have a lower price. I tried the Bose AM10 system and, in a word, they sucked!

Bose has probably the greatest marketing crew i have ever seen. They still sell all their speakers with paper cones, and have gaping holes in the audio spectrum on all systems they sell, but people still spend way to much for them. I have always said their slogan "Better Sound Through Research" should really be "Better Sound Through Marketing". That would be much much more accurate.

Bose sets up their kiosks to show the system in the best possible light, but you need to crank the sound up at one of them and step further back. THEN you will hear the problems they have producing sound as it was intended.

I'll definately have to consider that. I didn't even know till now that Klipsch is an American company, which is a plus for me. I thought that Kenwood was more or less all that was left in terms of American companies in this particular market. I checked their website, and the prices are pretty high with the exception of some of their entry level stuff. Do you know what I should be looking for as for their small speakers? I looked around their site, but can only find speakers and home theatre packages with their big floor standing speakers.

I am using my old dual cubes from my Bose AM7 set as my SR and backs. I have my back spkrs ceiling mounted, pointed down at the hot-spot.

I never liked the Bose cubes. They lacked mid range.

The AM10 had dual cubes also. I got the AM10 for $350.00 when my Bro in laww worked there and after one week sold them to a friend at my cost. He was very happy because he had nothing prior to that.

I think I have cost him about $6,000.00 so far by getting him started in this hobby.

I did also get him "into" computers too, and now he has a very hi paying job in that industry, so that more than makes up for cursing him with the HT bug.

Klipsch is the oldest American Speaker company AFAIK, and they make great speakers.

This last link is a bargain and I can tell you that Yamaha & Klipsch speakers mate very well together. That Sub-10 subwoofer is a fantastic sub and will make you go WOW yourself.

You have just made me happy as it appears to be more affordable than I thought. Those speakers will work as they are almost the same size as the current Logitech system I am running. The bad news is that I will likely have to stack the reciever on top of the HD-A1, as it's huge compared to the reciever unit for my proprietary sound system. I just recently went on an HD-DVD movie spree with BB and Amazon(bought close to 21 movies in the last 3 days), so i'm officially broke for right now. It will likely wait till next holiday, but now I know what I should be aiming for! It also makes me feel good that i'll be buying from an American company. Thanks to you, i'm bookmarking that second link right now for future reference!

You really DO want a REAL receiver like that Yamaha so you can upgrade individual components as time goes on. Most HTIB combo units are proprietary and you cannot upgrade speakers, etc because of this.
