Like some others here, I am interested in the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray disc player.
However, I am disgusted by the way they have handled this situation. Some of you may have seen a little button here (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...tophero-bluray) that says Update Me. I put my e-mail address on this mailing list a long time ago. I have not gotten one single update and the only reason I keep finding out that they have been postponing the BDP-S1 is because I check the product's website, which foolishly proclaims that "What you've been waiting for is finally here!" I recently e-mailed Sony Customer Care (whatever that is) and said: Quote:

I love Sony products but I'm not interested in this player. If I buy a BD player in the next 6 months it will either be the Pioneer Elite, the PS3, or the Panny. Any of those will tide me over until the true HDMI 1.3 1080p24 players are out.

Your in luck. The Toshiba HD-XA2 will be out at the end of the year and will have all that.

If you are serious, welcome to the club.
![]() You wouldn't be the first to buy a HD-DVD player when they were firmly in the BD camp. I know of many people who appeared to favor BD and have bought HD-DVD players. In fact, I think more BD fans (still favor BD too) own a HD-DVD player than BD players. I think eventually there will be little difference between the formats, but right now HD-DVD is still putting out (on average) more high PQ releases. BD is starting to put out some gems too now, so I think my biggest factor in favoring HD-DVD (price) will disappear in 2-3 years. Maybe sooner. I also think that studios will ALL be coming out in both formats eventually too, so that will become a non-issue too.

Hey, congradulations and welcome to the club! I knew that you would crack sooner or later. Our next goal should be in trying to get Mr. Smith to crack towards HD-DVD. I'll be sad that the HD-A1 will be gone, but the HD-A2 looks nice, although the rumored price isn't anywhere near the bargain pricing of the A1. Since my TV is only 720p capable, i'm jealous to see what 1080p is going to look like with the A2 for the few people that have a 1080p capable set. The good news, is that 1080p sets seem to be dropping in price like a rock and may become affordable for me next holiday season. |

At this point, what is shocking to me is that some people are still waiting for the Sony BD player and that BD hasn't lost the battle yet. Toshiba is the creator of HD-DVD and they have delivered a player while Sony creator of BD kept pushing back their player. I mean if they haven't released any Blu-Ray movies yet I would understand. But Blu-Ray movies have been out for several months yet they still haven't released their player (and I won't even mention samsung player with its defective PQ). So what is going on?

No, I'm quite serious. I'll be buying the XA2. I'll wait to see what kind of reviews it gets but I'm fairly certain it will be an ok player. Better than the A1, hopefully. There's too many Universal HD DVD's out there that I really don't want to wait for. That's pretty much the only reason I'm getting one.
I still think Blu-ray will win the format war. I'll admit that there have been problems with the format but I'm confident that will turn around quickly. Luckily, I'm willing to forgive unlike most people who went from BD to HD DVD. The problem is really Universal DVDs. I want to see Casino (Universal) in HD more than I want to see any BD that has been released up to this point. I love movies too much to only support 1 format.Someone on this forum said "HD DVD is here now. Why wait?" I'll agree with that.

I bought both the HD-XA1 and for my brother the HD-A1(this one for less than $300 with 3 year warranty). I couldn't wait for the next models or the BD players (kinda expensive).
Even if the newer models are even better, I can still use the ones we have for their great upconversion of SD DVDs, how could I lose?
