This is quite troubling I believe this certainly means that Playstation 3s will be in lower supply then said at E3. Expect big supply shortages and possibly a delay in Asai and Australia. I do still expect a definute lanch in November for Japan and America.

The question is: Is the a ploy by Sony to artificially create hype around the PS3 release to get more people lined up at store entrances on release day. I do not think Sony is beyond any kind of behaviour at this point.

It does look like there might be a smaller inventory on launch day, but it is most likely that the holdup is with HDMI 1.3 transmitter chips not being available yet.

If that is the case they should make the PS3 model without the HDMI connection now while they are waiting, and switch production to the HDMI 1.3 model when the chips become available.

Of course another reason might be further production problems that are different than the HDMI supply problem. I have heard rumors that they were having troubles getting all components to fit in the case design, but I have dismissed that as being ridiculous that Sony would not know what could fit in the case they designed.

I wouldn't want to be a Sony shareholder right now though, since they seem to be following the Murphy's Law.

Well, both Sony and MS have done exactly that with their last couple of launches in the videogame console market- so it's really par for the course at this point.

I seriously doubt they are doing that. 360 will be in huge supply and Wii should be well stocked as well this fall/winter. I seriously doubt there will be many wanting to spend over $700 (PS3 Prem, game, tax) for gaming. Sure the early adopters will buy, but not the average person. There could be waiting for parts for PS3 production.

Comments like this from VP's affect stock prices, so i don't think it's hype.

I agree, but this was the President for America, so it is even worse, since there are probably hundreds of VPs in Sony.

In the long run- you're right.

At launch...

Well...

Look up the average price that the PS2 and 360 fetched on ebay in the months after launch...there are PLENTY of people willing to spend in excess of $700 on gaming. They did it in 2001, they did it in 2005, and they'll do it again this year.

True, but that is a small market, the hard core, early adopter. The average gamer won't spend that much. I seriously doubt there will be a PS3 price drop until 2K8. The question is how many PS3s can sony sell before then? I just don't see millions of ppl in U$ spending so much for a console. Only time will tell...

Yes- in the long run, I agree with you that they'll have a hard time selling systems at these price points to the average gamer- but the qoute that we were responding to:

"The question is: Is the a ploy by Sony to artificially create hype around the PS3 release to get more people lined up at store entrances on release day. I do not think Sony is beyond any kind of behaviour at this point."

...concerns the launch window, not 2008.

The problem here, is that Sony is trying to do too much this generation. There was an article that was posted over at Hardforums.com where some IBM official stated that the cell chip yields arecurrently only like 12-15%. Keep in mind that the Blu-ray components are likely to be in short supply. Being HDMI 1.3 compliant isn't helping either. Microsoft suffered shortages at launch due to shortages in the DDR3 memory modules that were used.

Sony is going to launch on time. Because of all of the delays, it would be PR suicide to not launch on schedule this time around. Even if it means only getting a couple PS3's to each store, they have no choice. With the supposed yield problems of the cell chip, it's going to be interesting whether they'll even be able to mass produce these things for a while.

I like how the article picked up on the fact that the reiteration that they are on track to meet the original shipment goals was confirmed by Sony, but they did not dispute that that have not started mfg them yet.

We shall see if they make the goals, but it looks very difficult to me at least.
