For anyone planning on pirating BR material, you might want to read up on this. Anyone else a little concerned that those of us who use our players in a legitimate way are going to suffer for the actions of a few miscreants?

I have never pirated anything and don't plan to start. But if I buy a BR recorder I will expect to be able to record my favorite HD TV program from cable. And to be able to play that disk on another BR machine. And to burn and play my home movies on a BR disk. Similar to what I could do with VHS or with my DVD burner WITHOUT having the machine hooked up on a continual basis to the internet or my recordings playable only on the machine that made the recording.
If the recording can only play on that particular machine all my recordings become useless when / if that recorder dies or is damaged / stolen. A machine hooked up to some monitoring site over the internet is another bad idea. Do you really want someone being able to monitor what you watch and / or record? The recording industry really needs to be taught a lesson. Perhaps if we all agreed to not visit a theater or buy a DVD for six months they would get the message that the consumers are not happy and do matter. Or not. They would just blame it on piracy and push for even stronger controls. |

I want to be able to record something on my bedroom HD recorder while no one (read kids) are there to mess it up and play it at night in my home theater. There are just so many legal/moral possibilities lost with these new controls put into BR. Count me out of BluRay now for sure.

The CP is only for pre-recorded BD-ROM, nothing to do with recordable BD-RAM.
Since both types of burners will likely only have Firewire inputs, we'll be limited to recording what the source specifies... copy never, copy once, or copy freely. Copy once will probably be keyed to a certain device, copy freely would play anywhere. |
