Best Player for me

Trying to figure out which is the best DVD player for me...

Have a 720P Sony Wega and don't really buy too many movies, mostly for my kids. Most of the movies I have are either rented or backups from friends...

Now I am not sure if I should buy an upscaler like an OPPO or buy one of the nicer ones like a Toshiba A20 or one of the other true HD Player...

Any recommendations?

If the kids are big fans of the Disney movies and you think they would really notice the improvement going to HD over SD DVDs, then currently your only choice would be a BD player, since Disney is currently exclusive to the BD format.

Now if they would not notice the difference but YOU would for your types of movies even if Netflixing them, then the HD DVD HD-A2 would get you 5 (or more depending on the deal each week) free HD DVD movies for about $250.00. That means a great upscaler that also plays true HD movies would only cost about $125.00 for the net player cost after subtracting the value of the HD DVD movies @ $25.00 per movie.

Your best bet is to just get a Toshiba HD-A2 or HD-D2 (anywhere from $199 to $249 right now) which will upscale all standard DVDs to look fantastic on your 720p Sony Wega. Not only will it upscale as well as the OPPO you'll be able to buy/rent HD DVD movies and be blown away (warning: Once you experience HD DVD it might become an addiction ).

You could go with Sony's new lower priced BD player if you plan to watch the Disney movies displayed in actual HD resolutions. Now you did ask for an Upscaling player opinion, so I assume that you would be okay with watching standard DVDs of Disney movies up converted to HD frequency levels on your HDTV. In this context, an HD-DVD player might make a good choice and give you some future HD Video options, at a reasonable price.

So if I decided to buy a HD player, one that plays in true 1080p, how would the picture look on my 720P TV?

I ask because maybe I'll spend the money now, knowing that I will eventually buy a 1080P TV
