HD DVD's Won't Work ?

I have the OPPO 93 and was under the impression that I could play the HD DVD's , but when I load one, after a minute or so it comes up unknown disc.
I tried them several times with same result, put in a BD and worked fine ...
Also checked and has the latest firmware update.

Am I missing something here ?

My bad , I thought I had read on hear where the OPPO did it all ? lol
when I was looking into a new BD DVD player.....

I'm sure Dimple won't take them back or give me in trade what they cost me.
Most likely buy them back for pennies ...... Oh Well live and learn .....

no no no, Oppo is a universal blu ray player. Only an HD player will do.
Oppo 93 is great with dvd audio/sacd/ multi channel formats in 2 different ways, and customer service is top notch.

From what I recall, there was a universal hddvd bluray player but it wasnt an oppo.

Not to be repetitive but,
Oppo is a Blu Player - HD-DVD is a completely different technology they are no compatible.

Oppo can play every other shiny disc under the sun, so I think they should enable it for HD DVD playback as well. At least on their higher end model (like the 95 or 105). The format war is long over, geez, so I don't think there's any threat of a comeback if one high end player offers it and I think Oppo would benefit from it.

I swear sometimes that even mentioning HD DVD in many circles is still like a taboo subject. Like discussing the Civil War a year after it was fought, with reactions akin to those in the Slaughtered Lamb when inquiring about that five-pointed star on the wall.

There was really nothing I would call a universal player but there were three different Blu-ray/HD DVD players, two from LG and one from Samsung. The first one, the LG BH100 couldn't carry the HD DVD logo if I recall correctly, it didn't do something it needed to do for that honor but it could play the discs. The LG BH200 is a player I still use a lot, a very reliable player for me and I have used it more than any other Blu-ray player I have owned.

Typically, a universal Blu-ray player should play CD/DVD-V/SACD/DVD-A/Blu-ray. HD DVD and LaserDisc would not be required.

Pretty funny thought, an Oppo player today that would include HD DVD playback, it would be something that would get my attention if it did happen.

What's so funny about it? It wouldn't be the first failed format that Oppo is capable of playing.

which failed formats? sacd and dvd audio are still being produced, limited, Sony just put out Tarkus and ELP, with more to come.
Sacd are also being made.

You will have to name some, SACD and DVD-A are still current formats with releases this year and every year since around 2001 or 2002. Tiny niche formats would be my description but considering no HD DVD players have been made since 2007 or early 2008, I would sure call that format dead. I communicated quite often with Oppo from 2005 through 2008 and know the company had no interest when HD DVD was a current format, as evidenced by the fact the company made no HD DVD players. So yes, if Oppo made one now, that would be extremely surprising in my opinion and very funny.

I am surprised anybody today would own HD DVDs and somehow believe Oppo would make an HD DVD player but I guess if he hadn't followed the history, that could happen.

Sacd and dvd-a, what else? How you can classify them as successful formats is beyond me.

Oh, so a few releases still trickle out? Whooptedoo, they still do on HD DVD as well.
