Default What Movie if released now on Blu-Ray and on HD DVD would make you buy the HD DVD one

Everyone says Blu-Ray has killed HD DVD, if so why are so many still searching for HD DVD's. When Dark Knight came out I would have bought it on HD DVD if the had released it.

I think HD DVD is like FOX TV and Family Guy; the show was axed but demand from fans brought it back.

So what movie if released now on HD DVD would you run out and buy?

yep, HD-DVD is just a "little bit" dead. That's like being a little bit pregnant: you're already screwed. I'm holding on to my 8-track players too . . .

Do you own a blu-ray player?

I'm all for buying HD DVD's still if the price is right. The last time I bought it was around $5-6 a title.

Given the same price though and being able to choose between HD DVD or Blu-ray, I'd pick blu-ray. There's no reason to get it on HD DVD if the price is the same. By buying on blu-ray, I ensure I'll be able to watch it in any room where we'll have an HDTV. Right now that's just one room, but I know I'll be able to buy a blu-ray player.

Believe it or not, but the blu-ray spec is still not complete and its possible that first gen players may not be able to play newly released blu-ray discs as the standards continue to evolve. I'm staying away from blu-ray for now.

On the other hand, the toshiba hd-a2 hd-dvd is the best upscaling dvd player I have come across. It betters the Oppo 981 for upscaling nornal DVDs!

I get a very satisfying picture of off DVDs using the the toshiba and can pick up this player for around $50 on ebay. Certainly not as good hd-dvd or blu-ray but pretty darn close on my hi-def monitor. Close enough where the picture is quite satisfying. I picked up several of these players and find myself buying the occasional hd-dvd which are also cheap.

So, I wait until the blu-ray specs settle.

I have both a HD DVD player and a Blu-Ray player. I have about 300 HD DVD movies, and about 20 Blu-Ray movies.

While Blu-Ray moive selections will expand, why are people selling off their HD DVD machines and movies for a fraction of what they paid to go to Blu-Ray when the same movies they already have on HD are equal in picutre quality?

I bought 96 HD DVD movies off a guy on eBay for $400 including shipping, all brand new sealed, works out a just a few bucks a movie. In that box was Planet Earth, including about 20 French Imports, 10 German imports, all of which would have cost me $2,000 more two years ago.

Right now if I could go to a video store and buy the Triplets of Belleville or Leon or Lord of the Rings on HD DVD I would.

You both have gotten a little off topic and changed the question originally asked.

I can't see any reason to buy an HD DVD title if the blu-ray title is available for the same price. Even if a gen 1 blu-ray player might not play it, you can go buy a new blu-ray player.

I'm not selling off any HD DVD's, but I'm also not adding any titles unless they are on sale and damn cheap at that.

I just figure why add to a collection when you will reach a time when you can't get a player for it.

True Mshulman. If both companies were going strong and every movie was released on both formats I would buy HD-DVD but its not so I would have to buy the BD version. I too still buy hd-dvds but won't pay more than 5 bucks and change for them. I also prefer to buy combo discs but its not always an option so I try not to spend too much on a HD-DVD.

See it would destroy the industry if both were still going strong I mean we needed one dead and it so happened to be HD-DVD I mean people would not buy into either until one was dead I mean they would think why buy now when they are at war with each other so everyone would wait it out and maybe even wait until something better came out so no I would not buy anything that would be new on HD-DVD. I will buy 5 dollar HD-DVD's though of things that will take a while to come out on Blu-ray though. But we needed one to die and one did die. I mean they both might have died if they were both going strong now. I mean 2 formats with the same purpose is not a good thing now especially with the industry and economy like it is now. Just my 2 cents.

Actually there has been speculation, if TDK would be released on HD DVD. It was pretty clear that this would be the best selling HDM title of 2008 and if any title would have made sense to be released on HD DVD after the format has been "discontinued", it would have been TDK.

I'll tell what i'd buy on HD DVD today, given the choice and similar prices: a title with less video processing compared to BD, even if it meant lossy audio.

Just so I'm clear on your point. Because old discontinued players MAY NOT play some new titles you are staying away from current players that evidently will play new titles?
