But we are posting on a forum meaning we are writing.

So for "HDTV" you actually say "...DTV"?

So saying it one way and writing it another is correct? I don't think so.

This is from a UK site:

Quote:
Using a or an before an abbreviation
There are two schools of thought on this subject: "vocalisation of the abbreviation" and "vocalisation of the first word".

Abbreviation verbalised
By this rule, if the abbreviation starts with a vowel-sounding letter, the article used is "an"; if it starts with a consonant-sounding letter, it takes an "a". This would give "an NHS hospital" and "a BBC documentary".

vowel-sounding letters (take "an"):A E F H I L M N O R S X

consonant-sounding letters (take "a"):B C D G J K P Q T U V W Y Z

Note: H is pronounced "aitch"!

Word verbalised
By this method, the first letter of the first word as it is read out determines whether "a" or "an" is used. Here we would have "a NHS hospital" ("a National Health Service hospital"), or "an UV lamp" ("an ultraviolet lamp").

The second method can look and read quite awkwardly but is just about acceptable as long as the style is used consistently, or where abbreviations are commonly fleshed out in the head and in speech. Since the first method reads more naturally in the head, it's easy to slip into it when the second style is supposedly being observed. The first method is by far the more popular.

Acronyms
An acronym is an abbreviation that is read out like a word, such as NASA, OPEC, NATO, etc. So here we would always have "a NASA spacecraft", etc.
http://www.gpuss.co.uk/english_usage/a_or_an.htm

So if you always say or write "High Definition Television" instead of "HDTV" then "a" is appropriate. If you say or write "H - D - T - V", then "an" before the H is correct. As this link states, the opposite is "awkward" but is OK as long as one is consistent. And the first method is "by far the most popular."

You just want to have the last word on this, so be it.I am not writing if you want to be so technical I am actually typing, and one step further it looks as though I am printing.

I don't know about you - but I am reading words on a "page" (post) with my eyes.

I don't hear any words with my ears.

What would you say is a must have in an HD DVD collection?

For sheer eye candy - a show off disc to visitors:

Baraka

There is no story so it's not like you know what is going to happen and get bored. All it is is a collage of images - different places around the world with background music - like Koyaskonssi (sp ck)

Baraka was filmed in 65mm (I saw it in NY opening night) and is scanned at 8K to produce the BD transfer.

IMO - after a while we become numb to the quality of HD. We expect it so we see when image quality fall below our line of acceptance. And it is not often we we see images that are ground breaking in quality. . .

And we wonder what the next step after HD is going to look like.

Heroes looks very good on HD DVD. You can clearly see the skin pores on people's faces. It's one of the most highly detailed titles I own.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

I'm not going to argue as I really don't care, however there are a lot of disagreements about correct English I can find you just as many websites (including UK national curriculum documentation) that state what I have said.

However as for "...DTV" no, I would say "aich dee tee vee" rather than "haich dee tee vee"
