"An HDTV" sounds right because it is right. The pronunciation of the letter "H" is soft and therefore "an" is appropriate, for the same reason "a honor" is incorrect.

Jeez, you guys, this is my last post on the subject but that an HDTV is not correct. Just because it sounds right to you and others, doesn't mean it is...

Default How to use Articles ( a/an/the )

Geez if the post by Lee is correct then so is mine and for what it's worth I know that I am 100% right.
check out my link below, somewhat familiar source.

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/540/01/

Please read the third section down : remember using A or AN depends on the sound of the next word...

I mean guys I'm using the same resources as LEE so what's wrong with mine ?

Yes Lee, that is more like it. At the bottom of the page:

Quote:
Since the 'h' hasn't any phonetic representation, no audible sound, in the first exception, the sound that follows the article is a vowel; consequently, 'an' is used.
Therefore soft "h" words like honor and heir are preceded by "an". Once again, the pronunciation of the letter "h" is soft (with the vowel sound of a long "a", followed by a "tch"), "an" must also precede it. It is therefore an H, not a H.

But oh I forgot, this is the internet....

Quote:
Before a letter or an acronym or before numerals, choose "a" or "an" according to the way the letter or numeral is pronounced: an FDA directive, a United Nations' resolution, a $50.00 bill.
—Information in this presentation is based on statements made in
Webster's Dictionary of English Usage, Mirriam-Webster Inc., Publishers; Springfield, Massachusetts, 1989.

You can go ahead and say "a HDTV" and you'd be wrong.

JMS:

If you accept my link - which it appears that you do - you even highlighted this part:

Quote:
Since the 'h' hasn't any phonetic representation, no audible sound, in the first exception, the sound that follows the article is a vowel; consequently, 'an' is used
Then you have to "follow the rule."

HDTV - we say H......D......T.....V - so the H is hard - that means it gets an a - it's a HDTV

If we say High Definition Television - that is also a hard H so again it uses a - it's a High Definition Television

Wow,never thought I'd see English usage on a technical forum.... BTW,Lee,I'm with you, those 'a's and 'an's have to put in their proper places ,cause to a reasonably sound
reader/listener,it's sounds really awkward when they're not....

Summary: This handout discusses the differences between indefinite articles (a/an) and definite articles (the).Remember, using a or an depends on the sound that begins the next word. So...

* In some cases where "h" is pronounced, such as "historical," use an:

An historical event is worth recording.

Always nice to show the WHOLE "article" - you forgot this:

In writing, "a historical event" is more commonly used.

My dialect lets me say an HDTV as I'm Yorkshire and the dialect tends to omit H from the start of any word sounds.

However correct English for writing it would be a HDTV.

Yes exactly , in writing, well I'm not writing a book here I am posting words exactly as I said them straight from the lip, chatting if you will and I said "an HDTV" as It was intended by the sound that follows a/an /the.
