Smile HD DVD is it still worth it?

Just wondering if hd dvd is still worth it. Are the movies still readily available? Can you get good deals on them. I was thinking of getting the hd dvd drive for the 360 if they still sell them. How hard is to get the hd dvd movies? Where is a good place to get a good variety?

I just bought four HD DVD's for $25 bucks shipped from inetvideo.com last week. Super deals to be had.

It's not like the players or movies will suddenly turn into pumpkins at midnight. I've got lots of HD DVD's and I am not intending on getting rid of them. I'm content to stay purple for the rest of my days. I will not buy a movie on blu-ray that I already have on HD DVD. Players are plentiful on Ebay. Freddy

I just picked up the 360 version with Season 1 of Heroes and Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Season One with Pitch Black HD for $50 at Fry's but that was before xmas. I have heard that you can use the 360 add on to connect to your computer to back up your movies. Worth a shot.

How does the 360 version hook up. I ask because I am so tight on space and have no more available hdmi (however the 360 is hooked via hdmi) I am assuming the add on drive somehow connects to the 360 and not the tv?

Correct. The add on connects directly to the 360.

Here are some sites where you can find good pricing on HD DVD's. Try out Ebay too....

I have a HD-A2 and have watched all the Harry Potter movies in HD DVD on it and watched other non HD DVD movies that were up converted. I don't see much if any difference in quality. I was still searching for cheap HD DVD movies but now am content on upscaling. I will still keep an eye out for them cheap.

The HD-A2 is an excellent upscaler, and if you display is smallish (42" or under) and you don't sit very close, then you generally won't see a big difference between HD and upscaled SD.

I beginning to believe this is true. I have a 40inch Sony LCD positioned about 10 feet from view and upscaled standard dvds look awesome on my A3.

I agree with you on the up-scaling. I have an HD-XA1 and I feel it upscales better than my new Panasonic DMP-55K Blu Ray.

In fact I prefer HD DVD over Blu Ray but that's definately not a topic I want to start!

You know I noticed that too. I bought the BD55 a few weeks ago and when I watch a regular DVD, it doesn't pop like it does on my Toshiba HD-A35. So I think the upscaler chip on the A35 is a tad better than the one on the BD55. Glad I kept my A35 for regular DVD's.

The HD DVD players do indeed shine with SD DVD upconversion. The XA1/2, A20/2, and A35 received the best chips for upconversion.
