My guess is late 2008 early 2009. By then there will be literally millions of HD players and consumers will be in love with HD movies.

My guess is mid 2008 at the earliest. I remember that was one of the main titles that New Line was going to put onto THD during release. Right now that is looking to roll out around Q1 08, so figure they won't release half assed LOTR in HD, at least 6 months after that.

I think THD is likely going to be released, HD-DVD seems to be holding it's own and adding customers, so I don't see either format running away with it, possibly ever.

I just did some research on Star Wars and when it came out on DVD, not that they are the same situation:

Birth of DVD - March 1997

Star Wars Trilogy Box Set Release Date - Sept. 21, 2004

There were over 80 million DVD players in customers hands on that date.

I wonder if it'll be the Extended Editions...if not, I'll just keep what I have.

If their HD DVD release is the theatrical version...there's going to be blood spilled!

Ditto. I'm a huge fan of LotR (having first read it when I was about 13 years old...), and I like the movies, too.

I double dipped the DVDs.

But, for HD DVD, I want the extended editions. I'll pass on the standard ones...at least at first.

Seems to me that The Matrix sets and the upcoming Star Trek sets show how to do HD DVD/BR releases, so LotR should follow suit. Load 'em up.

Let's hope that the are priced for the The Matrix and not like ST.

The ST-TOS is 10 HD DVD Combos. That is the reason for the very high price. LOTR will br 3 or 4. Priced like the Matrix.

THD=TotalHD=Warner's patented disc structure that allows HD DVD on one side and BD on the other side. Like a combo disc only with only both HD formats on the disc.

That would be pretty cool. But, those extended editions are pretty long. I wonder if it might go to more discs.

With stuff like a 5 disc Blade Runner set, maybe LotR could be released with both the theatrical and extended editions in one set? That would be pretty pricey, though...
