Blockbuster’s Video Streaming Set-top Box?

Despite the market being crowed enough as is, a new competitor is set to release their own set top box, Blockbuster! Speaking at a Q3 conference call, the box will stream videos straight from Blockbuster’s online video service, Movielink. No pricing or firm release date has been announced other then the holiday season.

Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes also touched on the topic of Digital Downloads, a service which has caused many to plan ahead. Keyes claims the industry is dominated by VOD cable services at a estimated $1.4 billion. Keyes also claims by 2011 the Digital Downloads industry will grow to $2.5 billion.

I personally think this is a mistake, the market is already congested as is. They instead they should follow the Netflix route and integrate their service with an existing platform like the PS3 or Blu-ray players.

Yes there will be a new STB for their movie download service.

I cannot get into specifics right now, but employees are training on the system this month with some of them actually getting to take it home and use.

Default Streaming Video may work BUT.....

Comcast it already talking about bandwidth limits. Don't think DSL will work but you'll have to pay the piper.

Comcast should be the least of the worries. At least there cap at 250GB is somewhat reasonable. Imagine being on Time Warner with a 60GB cap on there max service plan.

I think its time the government steps in and regulates the industry.

As is these cable company's complain about capacity issue's with virtually no proof. All there doing is making a move to increase there bottom line by limiting what customers do with there internet connections.

They want you buying there video services not using the broadband connection that you pay for to use services like this.

If these company's wouldn't grossly oversell nodes there wouldn't be an issue. And how does a cap cure the problem? If everyone is still using there connection at peak times the supposed capacity issue isn't going away.

If it was truly a capacity issue they would be throttling users at peak times after say maxing there connection out for 45 minutes. At which point there connection speed would drop from say 10Mbps to 5Mbps. That would actually work better but then they can't charge you overage's.
