I just checked and as of today there are just over 100 HD titles in the Vudu catalog. That number is growing weekly. By summer I hope we'll see the "several hundred" HD titles like you suggested.

Expansion via standard USB hard drives is on the Vudu roadmap. This week they released software version 1.3 that does allow you to archive some titles to free up hard drive space, while allowing for free downloading again when you want the archived movie back. The archive priveleges are title specific, as some content owners don't want to allow this.
The other "big" thing in this weeks software release is support for IR control via programmable universal remotes like the Harmony series(was proprietary RF only in the past).
