Lightbulb Rumor: PSP2 in Development, as Powerful as First Xbox

As per TeamXbox:

Rumor: PSP2 in Development, as Powerful as First Xbox
By: César A. Berardini - "Cesar"

According to a report by Eurogamer's Spanish branch, Sony is hard at work on a true successor to the PlayStation Portable (the PSP Go! is just a refresh of the current PSP).

The publication claims to have obtained info on the graphics processor that will power this next-generation handheld. According to Eurogamer.es, Sony will use a quad-core implementation of Imagination Technologies' POWERVR SGX graphics IP core codenamed "Hydra." Such configuration would give the handheld a performance as high as the first Xbox in terms of graphics capabilities.

Imagination Technologies claims that at 200MHz core frequency, four POWERVR SGX graphics IP cores (SGX543MP4) will deliver 133 million polygons per second and fill rates in excess of 4Gpixels/sec.

Imagination Technologies also highlights the processor's ability to function as both a general purpose processor and as a graphics chip, which leaves the door open for Sony to use it a single processor that works as a CPU and a GPU.

Below is an artistic render of what a PlayStation Portable 2 could look like.

Well laid out OP per usual Razor.

Anyways, I doubt, but hope.

A one chip CPU/GPU solution is a must for a PSP2. If Sony is at work on one, and it's in the pipes for a sooner than later release, the PSPGo outrage is going to be massive.

That render is the same one they showed for the PSPGo btw.

Thanks Kam. I remember that pic too, it would be an awesome little unit.

Am I the only one that's confused by this?? I thought the first one was supposed be just a little bit less powerful than the PS2.

PS2 and Xbox1 is like comparing Apples to Pick-Up Trucks.

Zero similarity in the architecture. Hopefully Sony has seen the light and the 'like xbox' comment was regarding to a familiar dev environment.

But knowing Sony it will have 17 asymmetrical SPEs and a parallel port printer connectivity.

So, why is Sony wasting time and money making the PSP Go if they're working on the PSP2?

I agree. This is just more proof that the PSP Goo is overpriced and is a wasted purchase: just wait for PSP2.

First, how many of you are idiots? An honest question. This is a RUMOR. Is it true? Maybe, but then this was the same rumor that was floating around before the Go. The "artist rendering" was done BEFORE the Go was introduced and was done by a party completely unrelated to Sony. Then the Go comes out and is pretty similar to the "rendering?" Maybe they got their wires crossed?

Second, if it's true, Sony is going to be pulling an Apple. Push out an expensive toy only to have a cheaper better product shortly after. However, I missed in the release date for the PSP2 in the article. When is it coming out? Oh yeah, NO ONE KNOWS IF IT'S EVEN REAL!!!! Could it be possible that the PSP2 is still 3 years away? Yeah! Could it be possible that the PSP2 is 3 months away? Yeah! Could it be possible that the PSP2 is a figment of a drug induced coma? Yeah!

Jeez. People take rumors to be WAY too serious. Cygnus loves to jump on rumors put out by third parties as if that justifies his moronic statements. So if there was a rumor put out that Macroshaft kills a baby to make each 360, you'll believe that too right? Bull. Until Sony acknowledges this is true, its all speculation.

If/when Sony puts this out, THEN you bash the decision all you want. Until then, it's pointless.

Obviously you are a sony shill and have a hrd on against one of america's most profitable companies, and I as usual give my humble opinion on the matter.. PSP is long in the tooth. PSP Goo makes no sense from so many levels. The smarter move was to release the PSP2 in another year or 2 instead of releasing yet another hardware revision to PSP

Yeah, I'm a Sony shill. That's why I just told a coworker he should get the 360 instead of the PS3. Cause I'm such a shill that I would recommend a non-Sony product just to show how much I care.

(BTW, he got a 360 Elite.)

The only "shill" here is you. You shoot your load any time anything comes up that could possibly dent Sony. Who cares? Unless you are paid by The Vole, what's in it for you?

The Go is a revision yes. But what apparently has completely escaped your ability to comprehend is that the Go may not be targeted at gamers. (I know, that rocks your world. maybe you should lie down for a few minutes.) It's painfully obvious to even the most simple minded person that that the Go is just a fancy MP3 player geared at people who want mobile media. It's targeted at the Ipod and the Zune crowd. Granted it happens to play PSP games, but without a UMD, that's not as big a focus. Sony is most likely looking into breaking into the VERY lucrative MP3 and mobile media market. Screw the "gaming" on the Go. The Go offers a few things that the ipod and Zune don't and for a cheaper price! OMG did I say cheaper? The 8GB Zune is supposed to cost $230 and the 16GB is supposed to drop in at close to $300. That makes the 16GB Go cheaper than the new Zune, and more capable. Is it possible that the Go was never intended to be a gaming console? Can you even comprehend that possibility? To me, the Go is a decent $250 mobile media player in the market at about the same price as all the other mobile media players.

Only people like you focus on it's gaming as if that's the only point to this device. Let me ask you this, can you remotely connect your Zune over WiFi to your PC in a different state and stream movies stored on the PC? No? You can with the PSP.

Furthermore, you're STILL missing the point. This is what is known in the world as a "rumor." Maybe you should look it up. Do you have concrete proof that it's a reality? No? Really? Nothing to say this is a fact? So then what's the point of making stupid comments about something that ISN'T EVEN REAL yet? IF, IF, IF, Sony does this, I'll stand right beside you and say this was a dumb idea. But to use a rumor to claim proof of something? Seriously? Are you really THAT gullible? Although, that would explain your teenage crush on Macroshaft. You have to be an empty head to be so in love with that company.

Nintendo released the GB Micro after the DS came out.

I was loving the PSP Go, until I found out the UK Retail price is £220+ (the current PSP is £149.99 with a game or two) and so I'm now waiting for either a price drop, or the PSP2 before jumping into Sony's handheld gaming realm again.

HOLY CRAP! that's like $350US! I'd agree with that. If it hits the US for $250 like they claim, I'll still get it. If it's $350, I'm out.

Anyway, if they are even thinking of making the PSP2, they shouldn't have spent money developing and making the PSP go, they should have just gone with the PSP2 which is much better looking IMO, and if the PSP2 is a rumor and nothing more, then Sony should make an official statement saying so, that way, I wouldn't spend money on the PSP go fearing a PSP2 is right around the corner.
