Angry PS3 Clear for Takeoff!!!

Is it just me or does PS3 sound like a jet engine when the fans kick in while watching Blu Ray? I have the original 60gb model, and it's been sent into service twice for ceasing to play discs.

I also have the launch model and I noticed it got extremely loud last night while watching a movie. I have no idea if this really matters, but I just started outputting lossless audio via PCM to my home theatre. Maybe the extra processing is putting some strain on the machine, I don't know. I've yet to have problems, though (knock on wood), with the exception of the occasional shut down for no reason. But that hasn't happened often enough for me to consider it a problem.

Well I have experienced the loud fan, reagardless of using optical audio output or hdmi and the tvs sound system. The fan noise starts quickly and intensifies after the console is on for about 5 minutes to full fan speed! Pretty loud although there are no problems with performance. I have an older system and suspect the thermal compound may need to be replaced.

Nope, mines quiet. Doesn't even get loud when the fan kicks up a notch or two during heavy gaming during the day (I don't use a/c and it's pretty warm where I am)

FWIW the 60gb model seems to have the highest failure rate/problems, followed closely by any model with the single lens BD drive. If yours is an older model like you say and it's out of warranty (and you feel competent) pop it open and replace the thermal compound... or go crazy mod it with a complete water cooling system

I've got a European launch model (doesn't have hardware BC) and out of my Wii, 360 and PS3, it is the quietest.

My PS3 #1 started out super quiet at all times until it eventually started getting louder and louder, then the extended warranty ran out, then it died

Wink Back to normal

Well a day later the same system is relatively quiet. Fan is running but at a normal speed. The tv's audio floods out the lower fan noise at least. My place is hot and was a good 90 degrees the day the fan sounded like a rocket ship! Now it's about 80. I guess the fan was just kicking up a notch to full to compensate for the high heat on teh house that day?

Yeah, hot room = hotter gear.

Facing a fan toward it should help on the hotter days.

90f is hot for any piece of electronics, especially a game console.

LOL my 360 puts my PS3 to shame. Then again I installed an extra fan after my rod. Anyway both are quite loud in comparison to the Wii though.

my original 60gig never was loud, not once. even my new 80gig is more quiet then the 60gig and when i place the palm of my hands over the vents the old 60gig let out more hot air then the 80gig, even after keeping my 80gig on for like 2hrs with KZ2, it would barely let out any hot air compared to my old 60gig. i think its a good sign.

the only time any of my PS3's would get loud would be during "certain" bluray movies, but it wasnt the fan, it was the disc drive moving spinning at the fastest speed, it happens when you first pop in Madagascra 2 into the PS3, as it loads up you hear the PS3 disc drive roaring loudly, but then as the movie starts to play, it starts to quiet down again.

Eddie.....seeing as the BD drive in the PS3 is only 2x....you may have something else going wrong there.

The drive should be totally silent at the speed it runs.

The tech support is like a unconscious habit. But Eddy can defraud Wal-Mart out of as many PS3s as he wants and I'll be OK with it. It's for a charitable cause, the the good outweighs the bad.
