I think out of the 3 systems, Sony's approach has the most potential and is certainly looking the most promising right now.

Seriously?

Everything they do in what I watched of that video (I didn't watch it all) seems like something natal could do without the need for a wand.

What sony did seems pretty basic actually as the wand is really the key to the whole system.

Well for most games you'll need to hold on to something with buttons or triggers. Otherwise its just goofy like holding an invisible steering wheel... oh wait.

And we come back to my comment in the Halo/Natal thread that I really don't think flipping off the TV will be the default "motion" for fire my gun. Fire my fricking gun. Jeez what do I have to do? Jump up and down waving my right hand left to right while kicking my left foot front to back? Oh, you mean that really is the "fire" command? Crap, this motion stuff sucks....

LOL!

You need some form of tactile feedback. They'll need to add a controller of some sort for natal to make it truly useful on a gaming front.

I don't think the wand is due to any shortcomings, I think it's purely down to a necessity to make the motion application as trans-genre as possible. It'll correct the wrongs of the Wii remote, and also provide other perks from being a camera as Natal offers. I don't want a completely controller free experience, you don't hold air when you use a sword, u don't hold air when driving etc.

Actually I kinda have to agree with him. Try holding your hands out in front of you for 7-8 minutes... now do you really want to hold empty air like that to drive a car? The video with the girl hitting the balls you could see the lag between when she acted and when the onscreen character moved, probably at least 1/4 of a second, that'll be a bitch. Milo? Don't get me started, that was scripted and fake as hell.

Don't get me wrong, I think if they get Natal working it'll be great for some casual stuff and for a UI, but for serious gaming having a controller is a bit more practical it seems.

I agree with that, but who says Natal won't have peripherals? Most of them might not even be anything more then a prop..

Sony's system seems to be completely based around the wand, which can be limiting. Natal doesn't have that limitation. If you need to hold something in your hand, hold anything you want - Natal probably wouldn't care.

I think Natal will open up a whole new market for peripherals - many of which would be nothing more then props.

How? How exactly will it be "limiting" in a way that Natal is not? Any and all motion control is limiting in some sense. You are assuming that the Sony system is based only on the peripheral, which it may be, but we don't really know as it's still completely prototype. Natal has been VERY open about bragging you won't need peripherals. That was their whole demonstration.

Bottom line to me though is that BOTH systems are going to end up nothing more than a fad for a few months that will die out quickly. IMHO.

I won't argue with that, not at all.

You realize that sony already has motion tech working solely with the eye? Games where you control a rolling ball using your hand, a fish tank 'screen saver' type deal where the water ripples when you 'touch it' and the fish swim to your hand and such. They've been working on that since the PS2. Yes the stand alone motion tech for the EYE isn't/won't be quite as advanced as what Natal is showing/promising but it is there already without the wand. The real major advantage Natal has on the eye is the IR sensor which will work better for low light situations and for detecting Z axis movement (depth), I think the wand is primarily there to overcome that shortcoming.

I disagree. As reluctant as many "gamers" are to embrace it, I think the Wii was the beginning of the end for the "traditional" controller.

I think there is a difference between motion controllers and motion capture systems. Playing Ragdoll Kung Fu on the PS3 is a lot of fun with the motion controller. I can't see how you could be in that much control without a physical controller though. On top of which, the motion capture systems have got to be massive resource hogs, at least for now.

Having said that, I will freely admit I could be wrong. But to me there is a distinct difference between having some motion sensing in a controller and having a system that intends to completely get rid of the controller.

I certainly hope not. For some games, it is OK but I don't want all games to use it.

How good is it really though? 360 has it too, but its not very good and not used. I think Natal is going to have a significant amount of support.
