Default videogames 480p, 720p, 1080i???

I was hoping that somebody out there could clear something up for me. I have an Xbox running component video going into an RCA HDLP50W151. I've made the appropriate setting on the dashboard of the Xbox to display games at 720p(MVP 2004 can be played at this resolution), but the TV will only display at 480p. I've tried all the component inputs on the T.V. but to no avail. I've heard the term "downconverting" thrown around, but I'm not too clear what that is and why certain T.V.'s do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Default Xbox on HDTV

It may just be the particular game you are trying to use.
================================================== =======
From http://www.hdtvpub.com/games/xbox/index.cfm
This page is old and no longer being updated. Please Click Here to get to the new HDTV Video Game Database.

HDTV Video Games

That's right! A few video games now support HDTV. At present all HDTV games are on the Xbox video game console. Listed below are the games and what HDTV format(s) they support.
If you find a game that is not in the list, or supports different formats, let the HDTV Pub know so we can keep the entire high definition community up to date! (Please - only released games that have been tested so far.)

Many people have asked for a list of soon to be released games that will support HDTV. Unfortunately many developers say thier games support HDTV when it turns out to not be true. It is for this reason that this list is limited to released games only.

True HDTV Games

Lets take a look at the true high definition games, which means they support at least 720p or 1080i resolutions...

Game 480p 720p 1080i 16:9 Platform
Burnout (720P Mislabeled?)
Dragons Lair 3D
NBA 2K3
Street Hoops
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

To get HDTV signals out of the Xbox, you must buy the the Xbox High Definition TV Pack from Microsoft.

Enhanced Definition and Widescreen...

Unfortunately, we are currently not planning on listing all Enhanced Definition and Widescreen games. If there is enough interest in this from those visiting the HDTV Pub, Let Us Know and we'll do our best to get a list up and running. To date there are many games on the Xbox, PS2, Gamecube and Dreamcast that are in the 16:9 widescreen format and/or display a 480p output.

You got the right TV being a DLP unit to game on, so good luck.

Default

The set you are using caught my eye so I downloaded the user's manual and in reviewing the specs for the unit, I see your problem. According to page 21 there is the following:
Y PB PR Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video
signal as three separate parts through these three jacks. To ensure
maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y PB PR
connections. Accepts 480i, 480p, 1080i signals. Has priority over V
connection.
Apparently your set will not receive a 720p signal without downconverting it to 480p. Maybe try a 1080i game and xbox setting.

Default thanks

sure enough, you're right. I just got off the phone with the fine folks at Thompson, and they verified that this t.v. only accepts component signals at 480p. As for my DVI input, it works fine at 1080i. I can't find a way to display a 720p signal ANYWHERE on this t.v. Anyway, thanks for the response.

Default You can play H-def XBOX games on you t.v.

If your t.v. plays 1080i (which it should, unless its an edtv)you will be able to play all of the 3 or four games on XBOX that display in 1080i. All those games that are 720p like X-Men Legends, Soul Caliber, etc... forget about it. Your tv should indicate whether it does or does not above the compontent inputs. (hope theres enough room for you to see back there?) Most t.v.'s coming out now do 720p, even the Samsung CRTs.
