Default No luck with HDMI cable on 720p TV

Finding the elusive resolution menu is impossible... or does hdmi not work on 720p tv's?

Yeah, I know. The first thing you're thinking.. what a moron! Hear me out though.. I researched and tinkered and really tried before bugging you guys with what is probably a stupid question.

I have a Visio TV that does up to 720p. Got an HDMI cable today, and wanted to stop using component cables for my new PS3. Everything is plugged in and the PS3 recognizes the cable.

Upon booting by holding the button until the 2nd beep (I understand this "resets" the video settings to prompt the following question), it says:

Än available HDMI device was detected.
Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?""

If I choose yes, the screen goes blank.. and never comes back.

So I boot again, and this time choose no, and obviously I'm in 480i.

I log in and head to Settings -> Display settings -> Video Output Settings.
From what I've found by googling, supposedly I should be able to enter this menu, choose HDMI, and then receive another menu that lets me choose resolutions.

The problem? I never get said resolution menu. All I get is a screen that says:

"Connector: HDMI

Press the x button... etc etc"

If I select "Change" (which is my only option) the screen goes blank for 30 seconds, then comes back with nothing changed.

So can anyone shed any light on this? I've seated and reseated the cables, rebooted a million times, all to no avail. I've tried every combination of having the HDMI cable plugged in to one tv slot, then the other. I've tried coming to that "change" screen and then unplugging the component cables, but then my TV doesnt register the PS3 on the screen anymore. I cant seem to get the resolution menu, and everything I've found indicates that I need to somehow "deselect" 1080i/p in order for the PS3 to send a 720p signal.

Help?

Thanks in advance!!!!

It sounds like you're doing everyting right.

I'd suggest some steps to help you diagnose the problem:
Change back to your component cables, set for 720p and verify something else isn't wrong with your PS3.
Next try your HDMI again.
If it still doesn't work swap the ends of the cable to verify it's not the connector on one side being defective.
If it still doesn't work try a different HDMI cable.
If none of the above works then call sony because you may have a malfunctioning HDMI port on your ps3 (it's been known to happen)

Hope this helps! Happy New Year!

I'm not sure what the problem is, I did everything you did on my 720p and it worked fine.
