Default New PlayStation motion controller patent uses sonar tech

1. Just as the previous rumor said, the patent does describe a "transforming controller" that has "multiple configurations." Just like how the Wii has its own Wiimote + Nunchuk combo, you can combine these patented PlayStation controllers in certain setups.
2. "Motion sensing" seems to be built on sonar technology, using the PlayStation Eye's micropohone array and the controller's built-in "acoustic chamber" and spherical end. Think Wii sensor bar and Wiimote.
3. The ultrasounds emitted by the acoustic chamber, through audio delays and bouncing(?) signals, register as the relative position of the controller. Kinda like how bats use sonar to detect how soon they'll eventually smash against a cave wall.
4. In conjunction with the sonar tech, the PSEye can also help pin-point (i.e. triangulate) controller position, relative to your body and the screen etc. The controller also has an XYZ-axis accelerometer to register rotational movement.
5. It also seems that faceplates for D-pad buttons and face buttons are replaceable with every controller (to accomodate right- or left-handedness?).
An XYZ-axis accelerometer? I have no idea what that is but it sounds cool.

Why is Sony wasting all this money on R&D just to outdo the Wiimote (which by the way, aside from 4-5 games is just a gimmick or a light gun)? Aren't they losing enough money already? Stick with the damn sticks and buttons!

Maybe they're trying to cut into some of that Wii action. But I agree, stick with what you do best. Leave the gimmicks for the kids.

I think sony is looking to next gen. kind of how they released the eye toy and learned from it. then this gen the eye toy seemed to be a bigger part of games.

sony is most likely just throwing things out there and see what catches for next gen. things like that pretty much tell companies what is expected for next gen. maybe they come up with some other idea but their current plans for the ps4 won't handle that idea. well if the idea is big enough then they might change the specs on the system.

kind of what MS did with the 360 after meeting with Devs to see what they hoped and expected out of their system.

maybe sony is thinking more 3D gaming and a controller like this is more mandatory. maybe it will somehow play into games a whole lot better. 3D FPS useing a gun that was converted from a ps3 remote is a dam cool idea. imagine playing call of duty with ps3 graphics with a better then what's available motion remote. people would literally live and die based off how good they are shooting rather then how quick just their finger is.
