Default Sony to start US movie download service for PlayStation 3 machine in summer

(Associated Press WorldStream Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO_Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the U.S.

Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said Thursday the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month.

Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009.

This summer???

I cant wait to see how well this works... provided they have a attractive and workable interface and the price's comporable to the 360's movie DL service than this will be a big positive to the PS3 only crowd..

Meh. I don't even rent anything off of the XBL Marketplace... hopefully they'll offer some occasional freebies that differ from what is available on Live.

I guess releasing in the US first has become the defacto standard from Sony... even though the PS3 is apparently stronger there.

Agree with that. I pirate all my stuff off YouTube anyways, right TypeA hehe.

Freebies would be nice though. If it's a movie the girlfriend wants to see, like immediately, and its on XBL/PSN price will determine who I rent from. XBL got the perk of working with my Harmony without having to fiddle with dongles haha.

I dont rent much off of there now a days but I used to quite a bit and the quality is pretty damn good whether it be SD or HD..

And it makes sense to release the movie service in the US first since they know us Americans love our movies and will shell out a ton of cash on it.. Its amazing how many different VOD services there are starting to be, from Amazon, iTunes, XBL, PSN, VuDu, Netflix and probably more....

Ooooh, hope this comes to Europe, my download speeds on PSN are about 3-4x faster than what I get on XBL (I gave up tryin to download anything HD off XBL). XBL also has an incredibly restricted selection here too, only Paramount and Warner Bros have signed up to it so far and there are a whopping grand total of 94 movies, of which about 20 or so are HD, and about 4 are HD that didn't get released on HD DVD

Wow, you guys get screwed. So far Ive found xbl downloads to be faster, much faster. Ive also noticed that MOST new releases are also available in hd on xbl these days, that certainly wasnt the case when the service first launched and over the course of the last year or two, thats for sure.

They have not stated if Downloads will be HD. Will a 40gb hard drive be enough for an HD film?

I'm sure they are hashing that out as we speak, and if they dont offer HD DLs right away it will soon come.. As far as 40Gb being enough... Its more then enough as im sure you wont be able to keep them for very long and seeing as XBL's HD downloads are only 4-5 gb it will suffice..

I get by on my 20Gb HDD 360 and have watched about 15 movies and DLed 30+ tv shows..

a HD movie download is about 6-7gb so not that much different to what some PS3 games make you preinstall. If you were serious about using the PS3 for storing things though, personally I'd look at buying a much larger 2.5" HDD.

Doesnt the ps3 rely on its hard drive far more for games, and losses more drive space for them? I only ask because I find 20 gig very limiting if you want to keep things on your hard drive for any amount of time. Want to purchase an hd movie? Be prepared to make space on a 20 gig, I doubt a 40 will be much better. Of course, it all depends on how much you use the services I suppose.

netflix needs to shut everyone down and launch that dam download service. i would sign on for that in a minute. i also wish these companies would get together and agree on "in the theatre" to in home movie rentals, like what you can get at some hotels.

I also don't even bother with the XBL movie download service. i got a couple Free movies but i might have rented 1 or 2 movies, if that.

Definately depends on what you use your HDD for.

If people erase crap they aren't using (ie demos, game installs, downloads) they should do fine. If they like to let stuff pile on, on the PS3 even a 80GB can start to get cluttered.

I'm not one to talk, I've been ignoring my clean up duties, at 156GBs/~305GBs

Thats true, the PS3 does use more space on average for installs and what not but thats where the PS3 has the advantage imo.. You can upgrade to a 250Gb HDD for about the same price a 120Gb HDD would cost for the 360... And I tend to use services like these to support growth and what not and just so I can have a hands on experience and can give honest opinions rather then a recycled biased opinion...
