While I am waiting for my HDMI cables (sorry, not paying 5 times the price in a store), I decided to download a couple of demos from Sony, just to see how much gaming has improved. I am in no way a gamer, as I couldn't even figure out how to swing the bat in MLB
My question has to do with download speed. I have 10gb cable speed, that benchs at a shade over 10 at speakeasy.com. The first download of a demo went fine. I didn't even look at the file size. I can usually download all 70 some Microsoft updates when setting up a PC, so file aize means nothing. The second load was a combat game, and it took close to 2 hours to download. The only connection I have to the PS3 is an Ethernet connection running from my router. The only thing I can think of would be the Sony network was crowded and starved for bandwidth. Anyone have similar problems? After that experience I would be very hesitant to purchase a downloadable game from Sony. I have a feeling if you snagged a slow connection, you would time out and lose your download, unless they have a redundency system like download accelerator that saves a partial download. |

timing out while downloading a game is beyond rare to happen. its NEVER happened to me since the time i've owned a PS3, and i'veonly read about it on forums but its very very rare. if you do happen to time out during a download that you "PURCHASED"... .. that purchased is saved in your account even before you choose to download it. so if you time out, you just go back into your account download history(via account management) and you can redownload the game you purchased.
I get great speeds after i went from wifi to wired. i have a 10megabit connection through rogers and i almost always download stuff from the playstation store super fast (on average its about 1megabyte per 2seconds). .. however i do know that sometimes the playstation store can get very very very crowed ESPECIALLY on thrusday evening when everyone is trying to download whats new at the same time.. my advice just like i did...... wait till the following morning to do your downloading also i read on the playstation blog that they are going to upgrade their systems so that no matter how many peolpe are on. you will always get whatever speed you pay for (via your ISP) "up to 10megabits per sec" ... so for users who have 30megabit connection speeds and the store is crowed.. their connection may fall down to 10. but people who have say 5 or 8megabit connection, will not fall. i dont know when this will happen, i think it was suppose to happen with the release of the new PS store and firmware 2.3. but like just others, i've already experience slow speeds with the new PS store, not with downloading of videos or games, but of downloading the icons for the store itself.. just like ign reported..

You're not alone. I've not ever had a timeout from the store, but I've had updates timeout and fail. Like Eddie said, pick a time that's not peak times. Evenings are by nature, peak times. Try in the morning. I have seen faster response times in the morning.
