Default joystiq: GTA IV Poll results: Achievements, DLC put 360 ahead

joystiq took a poll as to which version of GTA4 PS3 and 360 owners will buy and why. Below are the results...

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/po...-gta-iv-for-x/

36,416 votes
Xbox 360 at 58%, PlayStation 3 at 42%

Conclusion:

The top reasons cited for playing Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 were achievements (24), the downloadable content (24) and more friends on Xbox Live (20). As for those who picked the PlayStation 3, the reason commenters most often gave was hardware concern for the Xbox 360 (17), either the Red Ring of Death or the loud cooling fan, especially after 100 hours of gameplay. Surprising to us was the number of people who said they didn't care about downloadable content (10).

Very interesting is the ratio of those who picked Xbox 360 over PS3 in the poll, 1.38:1. That the Xbox 360 overtook Sony's platform is unsurprising given its current lead in total hardware sales; sales data released by both companies in January put the ratio at 1.86:1 in Microsoft's favor (that's based on 17.7 million Xbox 360s worldwide vs. the 9.5 million end-of-March projection by Sony -- the reality likely makes for an even larger ratio). Anecdotally, it would seem a larger proportion of polled PS3 owners intend to purchase GTA IV compared to their Xbox 360 counterparts.

Here's what some of the Joystiq Network staffers said when asked which version they planned to pick up:

* Ross Miller: "Xbox 360. Most of my friends have Xbox Live and I need something else to play online with them between Call of Duty 4 matches and Rock Band marathons."

* Kyle Orland: "Three Words: Xbox 360. Achievements."

* Alexander Sliwinski: "I'm getting the Xbox 360 version for the potential of extra content and because of achievements. I'm not an addict, but I do like to earn them for recreation."

* Andrew Yoon (PS Fanboy): "Both versions are pretty much the same to me. But, I'm picking up the Xbox 360 version -- 'cos I am an achievement whore."

* Alisha Karabinus (Nintendo Fanboy): "Xbox 360 all the way, because I would need to jack actual cars, out on the actual street, to afford a damn PS3."

* Kyle Horner (Massively): "I've got both systems and I'll be going with the 360 version, mostly because I want to play the multiplayer on XBL and the feel of the 360 controller which already has the rumble. Also, the eventual downloadable content and native 360 development don't hurt either."

The early review of the game that got pulled said the PS3 had much more of a population on the streets. The 360 version has a more cartoony look and more bloom lighting.

Here's a link to a copy of it before it was yanked by Take2
http://home.comcast.net/~infamousdd/CGReviews_-_Cam_Garish_Reviews_-_One_Review_at_a_Time.html

Both games will be great, but early indications say the PS3 being the lead dev platform paid dividends.

360 version has "pop-up" pedestrians and cops. The PS3 does require an install, but the install seems to keep the pop up people and draw distances down.

I'd rather have trophies in my penthouse apt than achievements. Plus the PS3 version has better anti-aliasing than the 360 version.

We still don't even know what the DLC is. It could suck balls. It could just be extra missions. GTA4 DLC doesn't mean jack to me until we know what it is.

I'll never understand the reasoning behind people's fascination with achievements/trophies. They don't mean, or do anything...

Anyways, like I said before the 360 version will sell more. We didn't need a poll to know this. The 360 total install base is over 18 million worldwide, the PS3 is hovering around 11.5 million.

Because of this it would be a miracle if GTAIV sold more on the PS3...

Want to wager a BD of the winners choice? Shall we set some parameters? End date, source of numbers, etc?

Home still is vaporware until it is released. Got a link saying PS3 version has better anti-aliasing? In the past, PS3 version of multiplatform games had more jaggies and ran poor. Correct me if I am wrong but I think 360 was the lead platform for GTA4. Regarding DLC, M$ spent $50 million for it. Even R* rep said 360 was the definitive version to buy:

http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/grand-...13153735796095
It's no secret that the long-ago announced downloadable episodes for Grand Theft Auto IV will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game. According to Rockstar Games spokesman Hosi Simon, however, there won't be any consolation prizes for those who choose to buy the PlayStation 3 edition instead. When asked during a preview of the game (which you can read about here, if you haven't already) whether there would be any advantage to owning the PS3 version that could rival the 360's exclusives, Simon said, "not that I can think of."

"They're identical games," Simon continued. "We're not hardware makers, and we're not like a pawn between these companies, we try not to be as much as we can. We make great games for people to enjoy on whichever system they want.

"But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose," Simon said.

Did you even read the thing? No offense kamspy, but it almost seems like you are intentionally trying to make it seem like the PS3 version is better than the 360 version. Here is what the author actually says concerning the graphics/performance between the two systems:

Quote:
The truth is that, if installed, the game looks equally impressive on both systems.

The PS3 has a more relaxed color pallet, but this gives everything a more realistic look. If you don't like the realistic look, and you have a HDMI connection, you can fiddle with your PS3 display settings and get it looking much more saturated. The textures are just as sharp as the 360 version, and there's little to no pop-in or screen tearing. The PS3 takes longer to load than the 360, but I took several different head counts in game at different locations, and I always found the PS3 to be more populated than the 360. This could be attributed to the dynamic nature of the world, but it's hard to tell. Either way, the difference was never more than five to seven pedestrians or three to four cars—it's not really much of an advantage.

The 360 is bright. Boy is it bright. Based on discussion history, this one will be claimed to look better, but it'll really be preference. The texture quality is the same on both systems, but the 360 has a more cartoon-like look. This isn't a bad thing. It just depends on preference. I'd compare the difference to that of Oblivion on each system. The 360 also suffers from some frame rate drops that are almost non-existent on the PS3. Installing the 360 version on your system's hard drive, however, will bring performance almost up to par with the PS3.
The 360 version comes with an optional install (PS3's is mandatory). If you choose to install on the 360 then the performance is basically equal to the PS3s in loadtimes and pop-ins...

ok there is one thing that this pole does not touch on.. and thats the user base actually taking the poll on there website. how many canusal gamers actually take this poll? which im sure is higher than the hard core gamer. now im not syaing the PS3 version will outsell the Xbox360 verison (which most of the non-fanboys know that it wont) but the poll must be taken with a grain of salt. if anything this poll just shows which version the hard core gamer prefers. and im realy suprised that they didnt mention the XBL functionality as the top reason why gamers pick it?

and are you kidding me that the only high % reason for getting it on the Ps3 wasnt becasue of the PSN, name brand, or graphics, or anything like that.. it was only becasue of the faulier rates of the Xbox360.. so basically all the PS3 users would get it on the Xbox360 if the failure rate was lower?

BTW, here are NeoGAF's poll results:

I only link this because Joystiq users tend to have brain damage. No offense, Cygnus.

Backpacking around with my girlfriend for 3 months.

In fact we just booked all our hostels.

Lisbon
Barcelona
Paris
London
Brussels/Bruge
Copenhagen
Stockholm
Helsinki
Berlin
Zurich
Rome
Dublin

It's gonna be awesome. Also, I am plotting out where I want to move too. I just recently found out that I have French citizenship and I am considering moving over to Europe for a time to establish roots in a different culture.

Anyways that was way off-topic. Sorry.
